Well that was what we discussed. Whether or not this will be the case remains to be seen.

This is why its really important to look over used cars very carefully, good luck with Carlson, I hope they do right by you one way or another.
not really, i got into a major accident, had to replace the windshield, the arms on the side that hold it up and the roof. I reported it to my insurance and got it fixed. about a year later i checked it on carfax, and it said my car was clean. no accidents whatsoever. Carfax is totally unreliable, my girlfreinds car was in an accident as well, nothing showed up.

same with my old civic. and when I had an inspection done the starter was crooked, the fender and hood were non factory parts..etc. could tell it took a pretty good swipe to the front right of the car.

when I was buying my car, I was bored and had free carfaxes, and was curious what a wrecked carfax looked like. So I went on ebay and found a wrx that the owner claimed had a salvaged title and was rebuilt (though it looked new in pics cuz he had it fixed) and carfax said the title was clean!?! After that I also decided carfax was totally useless, heres a guy openly saying his car had a salvaged title, and carfax didn't know. I no longer trust it at all, way overrated.

That'd be awesome if u got the 05 though  it'd be the deal of the century!!!

Thanks for the support everyone. Except for one of you, you all seem to see the problem here. I do have to believe that Carlsen has a reputation to maintain. They must be aware of the exposure +or- that we have here. Imagine~~~ Someone sees your car"Hey nice car. Where did you pick it up?" "Go to Calrsen they are the best!!!" Or "Hey nice car. Where did you pick it up?" "That's all I can say is Carlsen Those $%&*^%$*^%&(^%(^%$$" You get the point. How many threads are there about Where should I buy a Subaru in the Bay Area?

carfax knew my old audi had a salvage title.
I expect that not all insurance companies report everything, but often when they buy a car out as totalled it does wind up saying so on carfax.
But I wouldn't trust it either for the reasons stated above.

here is a tip when checking out used cars:

take a piece of paper and put a magnet over it. run it the course of the car, esp. the doors / rear / etc... the magnet can be pretty light and wont do a thing to the car.

if the magnet falls off at any one point you can count on some bondo work

not only that, look at how many threads there are that say DONT GO TO STEVENS CREEK SUBARU EVAR!!!!! I think I counted 58,963 of them. And bad feedback always travels way faster than good feedback......so IF carlsen was smart....they would do everything they could do to maintain their reputation and fix this problem, its not a small issue here......esp. if they have EVER been on I-club before.....enough of us bay area i-clubbers go there for our maintenance, I am sure they are aware of who we are, and how many of us support them and send them business. Good luck and keep us posted

just my 2¢

-Ted

edit: Dub.....that is true....Good point, and a very good way to find any previous body damage hidden or not.

I think carfax has a buy back Guarantee. You might want to check on that. Just in case...

Buying a car that was in a wreck isn't the worst thing in the world, but since you didn't know about it that's obviously not cool. Props to Carlsen for stepping up. Hope they come through

Sounds like they intend to make sure you are satisfied. Whether that is an '05 at the same cost, a partial refund to adjust the value, or a complete buyback I guess is up to you as to what it will take. Good luck and I hope they follow through the way the guy made it sound.

^^I have to believe that there is going to be a buy back of the '04. Basically nul the contract transfer of deposit to an '05. With a really good price, to save face.

Don't trust Carfax. It is just an extra source of information. I know a person who bought a stolen car off craigslist.org. Even though he wasn't the smartest of the world (he didn't see the title because the seller pretended to work for a dealer), he did use Carfax and of course showed clean title. Now of course the car is re-possessed and he lost $6k.
