There will probably be a similar thread on BARF. It will go something like "Jackass in a Benz side swiped my Duc in SF!"
People on BARF will then reply with "man that sucks, **** cages!
"
LOL.

uhm, what speeds were you traveling at? anything over 25mph, a biker is NOT supposed to lane split (deemed unsafe). And a biker is NOT supposed to lane split while traveling 10+ mph than the flow of traffic.
oh yeah, a biker is supposed to lane SHARE, not split. Meaning they were supposed to keep all mirrors/elbows what not within the lane while splitting. They are also not allowed to ride on the lane markings/dots (usually found on freeways)
or so i heard

In sharing collisions, the decision usually goes against the biker because they are coming from behind and should be able to see clearly enough ahead to share safely. Conversely, rearward view for drivers isn't as clear - especially in traffic.
In the op's crash, it seems that the witness must have been really specific that the op took out the biker - otherwise they would probably have sided with the car.
Personally, I don't share lanes unless the traffic is pretty much stationary and I keep it between 5-10 mph. This gives enough time to react if a car veers or tries to change lanes. Regardless of who is at fault collisions are worth avoiding - especially on a mc.
These speeds are a rule of thumb - there are no legally specified speeds at which sharing is permitted. Two vehicles (doesn't even have to be a mc) may share a lane as long as it is safe to do so. 'Safe' varies depending on conditions, relative speeds etc.
