What are people's recommendations here? Should I go for a quiet catted downpipe and quiet catback exhaust? As far as I can tell, if the exhaust is under 95 db it should be legal. I have the stock exhaust, but I want the rumble so I don't want to use it.

My recommendation is two posts up. You can go catted or catless with that and they're pretty quiet exhausts cruising. WOT is another story
I personally run a catless dp with maddad 3inch catback.

Go with a greddy sp1 or 2 .. any greddy exhaust is quiet.

Does anyone know where I can get independent sound decibel rating tests of my exhaust so I can use it as evidence when I fight this ticket in trial by declaration?

The only place that they will allow you to provide "evidence" from is the State Ref. They are the only allowed testing body for this stuff.

I hate when officers do things like this. Write a ticket for something they arent trained on.

I would leave your exhaust alone, get it checked out by a state ref and go from there. If you are over the legal limit, swap it out. If you are UNDER, notate it so, go to court, win and then file a suit against the dept as stated previously.

Also, you just moved here. Do you have CA tags and license already? If you are still within that 30 day (I think) window you arent subject to CA laws just yet.

I am active duty military and have out of state tags and license. So my WRX is totally illegal. Tint, exhaust and front window stripe are all way out of regs but I get away with it. Even been pulled over 3 or so times by CHP.

Might be, I know if you stay in CA more than 10 days a month they consider you a resident.

10 days to get a license and registration... sounds about right for how long you wait in line at DMV haha

Back in the 90's I had a modified 240Z. When I had my exhaust system custom made the shop put a flange after the rear axle. I had them make 2 muffler setups, one with a quiet Turbo muffler, and the other with a Flowmaster Fluger which was loud as hell. I ran the Flowmaster all the time. When I got a fix-it ticket for my exhaust, I would go home, swap mufflers, find the nearest cop and get it signed off, then go home and swap back to the Flowmaster.

My exhaust is likely over the 95db limit, but without having it tested, both the police and myself have no way of being certain. Innocent until proven guilty, no?

I've been here for 2 years and have cali license/reg, so no dice there

Do you guys think I could swap out my aftermarket exhaust for my stock exhaust and run it by the police station to get it signed off even though 27175 CVC is a non correctable ticket?

86 dB. I'm guessing they aren't even close to this.
