Downsti,

Some food for thought.

Evo parts ARE cheaper, even brand new ones. I dont see why some STi TBEs are like 1200-1400. Many vendors sell BRAND NEW complete turbo-backs for $500 or less. Add a MBC, drop in filter, and a tune, and you are at nearly 300whp with less than $1000 spent.

Properly tuned on higher octane cars are breaking into 11s, if you dont believe me, check out evoM

Here is andy at speed elements dyno graph. Only 2 mods which can be had for less than $100 (MBC, filter) and his tuning skills. He did another car and it put down 280/280 on the SAME Dyno. I had a filter, full turboback, and the cobb AP and only put down 266/275 with my STi. I was going to have it pro-tuned by mike but he said he would prob only be able to get 10whp/10wtrq max out of it. Tuning is cheaper for the evo since you can use openECU and ecuflash. No need to buy the $600 accessport AND dyno time.

Either way, buying these cars SOLEY to drag them is gay =P. I likely wont ever drag mine, my clutch/drivetrain arent worth abusing for 1/4mile bragging rights

As for potential? These IXs have a ton, with little money spent. Come on, almost 300ftlbs with JUST tuning basically? THe MBC is only to maintain boost. I think he tuned it to 23psi or so. 23psi on a STOCK car with 91 octane?

As for my parts, right now im at like $500 or so spent, only the KN drop in is used

TP/DP-235
HKS midpipe-50 (ebay deal, still brand new)
Magnaflow muffler-65 (brand new)
MBC-50 (brand new)
Filter-30 (used)

No I just need to finish my axel back piping and get tuned/flashed

I may break $1000 since I'm getting a custom dyno tune instead of a flash

The sti is a great car, but as far as making power for low cost, the evos stock FMIC, turbo, and turbo placement make it a lot easier. With 100octane and meth, expect 330-340whp out of an evo IX to the wheels. with after market manifold and larger FMIC, expect that to go even higher. There are stock turbo Evos in the 10s

No stock turbo STi is getting anywhere close to that

yea i know
but like i said

theres a point when sti and evo are even if the money are spend right
but once u reach those certain point i will take much more money to mod STi to be fast.

but like i said
i have 2 other friends
with evo 9 mr and one is basemodel

one is pushing on 26 - 27 psi with full TBE and MBC and tuned on 100 octane
his making 325 on that mustang dyno at EIP

and one is with same mods as the mr but with exhaust cams pushing about the same number and tuned on 100 octane gas

not to make it sound that im thinking im fast and all **** like that, but i can be neck and neck with these guys whole time with their 100 octane map and thats from 60 - 130 so im sure no driver skills involve
i never dynoed my car or i wont even bother dyno it unless its free
im goin to try very hard to get 12.2 on sac next time go to the track

yea i know about that
andy is a good tuner
with jus 272 on basicly stock car i was at that EIP that day when that thing was pulled

My cousin has an evo ix with just a full exhaust and dyno tuning and hes hitting 12.1...I hear alot about how evo's are potentially faster than the sti's unfortunately..and boosted projectz has alot....of evos that are faster than that..kinda makes me wish i had an evo..

Does your cousing post on norcalevo?

The sad part is, the ease of making power wasnt even the top reason I traded my STi for an evo

Really sounds like the evo has the most potential with spending the least amount of money, although quality wise the interior of the evo is nothing like the sti's. Reliability wise I'd also probably go with the STI. Now what about the suspension? Supposedly the evo handles better than the sti as well but is that only the MR model or all models?

I personally heard that the evo has a lot of electronic assistance, more so than the sti. Might be just a bs rumor though.

Having owned both.

Hp per dollar, yes, the evo wins

Interior? I intially thought that the suby interior owned too, but after a year of ownership, I can honestly say its not all that. The blue gets old fast, the stock 04-05 front seats SUCK (straight up, unless you are 220lbs+), the wheel is kinda big, the center console is just painted plastic and scratched easily.

As for the evo, the all black is much nicer on my eyes, the stock recaros are GREAT stock seats (I would feel fine auto-xing in them with harnesses), the wheel is smaller, the back seat is larger, has a center arm rest for rear passengers, the shifter is better placed (at least for me). The only thing the STi excels in is the center console look and the cluster. Otherwise Ill take the evo any day (the door panels are identical if that matters).

Handling? The evo does take the cake again, in stock form. In stock for it has a thicker RSB, the struts are more firm, wider stickier tires, has a front strut bar stock, and the steering feel/reponse is just wicked compared to the STis steering rack (even though I had the "improved" 05). Honestly, I feel my stock evo IX handles better than my modded STi did (cusco RSB, espelir GT springs, whiteline rear endlinks, STi Strut bars, AI performance alignment). Not only that, but its not nearly as twitchy in highspeed corners like the sti is.

As for electronic assitance? The evo is no more electronically driven than the sti. The acd and dccd do similar things, if anything the dccd is more adaptive. The US evos didnt get the spiffy AYC (active yaw control). Although I really dont care for the IX and its DBW throttle. I find myself double blipping all the time to get to the proper rpm

I also seem to recall that when I went to the mitsu dealership back before I got my wrx, the guys there said that mitsu would stand by their waranty even if I tracked the car, in fact they welcomed me to. o_O I don't think subaru has the same policy but maybe im wrong..

I've heard so many different stories about this about both manufacturers. I'm begining to think it just varies from dealership to dealership.

And I was also disappointed to hear that the Evo's handling, although similar on paper, surpasses the STI's. At least that's what the general consensus is between people that have driven both cars is. Again, like in power mods, the Evo sets the bar so high on handling that it seems the STI is below par. When, in fact, the STI still outperforms most other sports cars anywhere near it's price range.

I've been a big fan of both cars ever sinse I saw the (GC8 style) STI and the Evo VI in a car mag back in 2001-ish. For what ever reason, still not sure to this day, I like the WRX STI better. So knowing that it has always been playing catch up with the Evo (even in 2.5L trim) is sort of a disappointment. And with the help of drivers like Colin McRae and Petter Solberg and the sales of little brother WRX, the STI manages to be more popular still.

The good part is, I think that the two cars are close enough to eachother in virtually every aspect, that owning either one would be satisfying enough. Most differences between the two seem like nit picking at best. Even though it seems that the more hard core track guys tend to bail ship and trade in for an Evo. While the more daily driver oriented seem to switch over to the STI. Not to generalize every owner, but that's just something I noticed.

.... to add to the lameness of my post, I'd also like to point out that I have yet to drive either one.

just an FYI, ive owned both. I drove them back to back daily for 2 weeks or so. In stock form, the evo is much less forgiving as a daily driver, thats for sure

No cruise control and humming along at 3500+rpm on the highway reminds me of my honduh days, lol

Those are my 2 major gripes so far, and the center console, otherwise I dont regret making the switch at all

Don't the evo's have 6 speeds? 3500 rpm? :/
