evo question
the MR has a close-ratio 6-speed, the GSR has a 5-speed. I usually cruise at 75-80, so yeah, 3500rpm or so
3000rpm at 65mph. The 5-speed actually gets better mileage than the 6-speed

In general, yes. Not only that, but if you burn 1 gear, you can replace that 1 gear. If you screw up your 6-speed, you basically have to replace all of the internal components

Only thing is, is I was looking to maybe an 05 subaru or Mitsu but seems like theres a big difference between the 05 and 06 evos.

not any worse than my STi =P. So far im avg about 20mpg mixed. I got like 17-18mph mixed with my STi
andy at speedelement has some tricks with the ecu to pull 300+ mile tanks
I only broke 300 miles like 3 times with my STi before the light comes on (25-26mpg)

And I was also disappointed to hear that the Evo's handling, although similar on paper, surpasses the STI's. At least that's what the general consensus is between people that have driven both cars is. Again, like in power mods, the Evo sets the bar so high on handling that it seems the STI is below par. When, in fact, the STI still outperforms most other sports cars anywhere near it's price range.
I've been a big fan of both cars ever sinse I saw the (GC8 style) STI and the Evo VI in a car mag back in 2001-ish. For what ever reason, still not sure to this day, I like the WRX STI better. So knowing that it has always been playing catch up with the Evo (even in 2.5L trim) is sort of a disappointment. And with the help of drivers like Colin McRae and Petter Solberg and the sales of little brother WRX, the STI manages to be more popular still.
The good part is, I think that the two cars are close enough to eachother in virtually every aspect, that owning either one would be satisfying enough. Most differences between the two seem like nit picking at best. Even though it seems that the more hard core track guys tend to bail ship and trade in for an Evo. While the more daily driver oriented seem to switch over to the STI. Not to generalize every owner, but that's just something I noticed.
.... to add to the lameness of my post, I'd also like to point out that I have yet to drive either one.

I pretty much disregard all that magazine crap that puts the evo's above the sti's most of the time... just take a look at Pro Solo Nationals this past weekend (A Stock and STU):

I admit though, evos are kickass cars, and I would totally consider one if I had confidence in Mitsubishi as a company... (they have too many corporate scandals and money troubles for my taste).

anyone that has worked on an impreza and an evo will tell you one simple statement..
"i'll drive an evo, but i won't work on it" the evo is such a beetch to work on compared to the impreza.. otherwise both are great cars and the final decision is up to you... i'd love to own an evo, but there's just something about the boxer rumble i cant give up

Engine-I4 so the heads/spark plugs are right there
Turbo-also right there on top in front of you
Exhaust-the DP and cat as so easy to remove its not even funny, the subies DP is a pain in the **** to remove/install
Also, no up-pipe or huge heavy manifold under the car
Suspension/brakes are about the same, clutch install rates are the same, etc. The only thing thats easier to remove on the STi is the TMIC since its right there, and the evo you gotta remove the front bumper (which is easy)
For the person talking about auto-x A-stock, yeah the STis generally do better due to their low end grunt, however on open race courses or the street-preped classes, the evos really shine. I think an evo holds some sort of track record at every major track in CA (mainly the muellerized evo). The wrx/sti dont hold any
edit: Oil changes are easier too on the evo, no stupid under tray
