EEK! speeding ticket, help

i've posted this up at the other WRX forum..but didn't really get the answer i was looking for.

here's the scenario: i got a speeding ticket for 115 mph at COALINGA, highway 5. it's my first offense.

here's what i know so far: it's a misdemeanor, 2 points. i have to drive all the way back to coalinga to appear on court.

here are the questions: How much will the fine be? has anyone been through this kind of situation before? would i get my license suspended?

THANK you in advance, i would really appreciate if you have any knowledge in this.

NOTE: as far as fighting it.. i'm not going to do, too much hassle and i'm taking responsibility for my actions. so please, don't flame. i just need some info and some positive advise.

A coworker of mine received a speeding ticket in the same exact area. I believe he was going 120 and got nailed. He had to pay a fine (sorry I forgot how much cause it happened 3 years ago) and also, his license got suspended for either 30 days or 3 months. And he did have to go to court in coalinga. He couldn't get the case tranferred here. Sorry, that's all I remember...

my bro got a tix on 5 down there somewhere ( 2hr drive from SF) and his fines were reduced to $500 and his DL was suspended for 3 months. He was going 110 mph though

One of two things happend spidey- either he got you on radar (or paced you) or he didn't. If he did, there isn't much you can do. If he just pulled you over after an airplane radioed him, you're probably in the clear. Those are VERY easy to beat with the link supplied by Steppin Razor above.

As for taking responsibility, err, uhh, yeah. You can sometimes slide by at 90-95, but triple digits always gets you nailed.

Just for general knowledge, if you are tracked by a plane OR a cop on the ground by timing your car between two fixed points - these are speed traps and not legal in CA, even though they give you a ticket the judge will throw it out if you contest it (CA MVC 40802 - speed traps aren't legal). The only way to lawfully get a ticket is to be paced OR by radar/laser gun (CA MVC 40801 says it's okay to track your speed via radar/laser or pace vehicle).

If you get a ticket, check the records the road must have been surveyed within the last 5 years OR signed off by the correct official (I think this is also covered in 40801 but I may be mistaken)

Good Luck.

Re: EEK! speeding ticket, help

Your fine will be $450-750.

You're lucky you didn't do over 120 or twice the limit, because that can lead to forfeiture of your car, jail time, serious fines (as if those aren't), and 1yr. suspension of license.

You may get your license suspended anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months.

Read the ClubVortex writeup, its the real deal, and definately use TicketAssassin.

I handle ticket situations in much the same way described in the ClubVortex article, and yes, I have friends who are LEOs and give me their business cards (BTW - perfectly fine to put on the back of your DL).

FWIW, I recently got popped for doing 59 in a 35 (Pleasant Hill: Contra Costa Blvd. & N. Main). He wrote me up for $10 proof of correction for not having my registration card on me.

scooby boy,

yea it's been awhile...i've going to school and work fulltime so i've been just busy. one of these days i'll come to those meets.

thank you everyone for clearing some things up.

i guess it's going to cost me around 700-1400 for the fine, a possible suspension on my D.L. and an insurance increase as well.

=(

Few tips...

1. Ask to get 1 point cleared via Traffic School (insurance will see just 1 point)

2. See if you can get the fine reduced or no suspension.

3. Dress Professional

4. As mentioned speed traps are illegal. If not gotten by radar or pacing, then they have no grounds.
