If I bring a geo metro converted to 4wd with tractor tires and a JATO rocket on it, what class would I be in if I carried it on my back as I rode a mountain bike around the course?

Depends. Do you have street tires or knobbies on the mountain bike?

Huh? Wha? *rubs eyes*

I finally got a damn job.

Unfortunately this means I'm no longer on "vacation" - I'll try to get stuff updated this weekend (2004 schedule, new mod classes, etc)

Will someone take me on a ride along on dirt..Or show me somewhere i can practice in between. I just want to see how it is...And how much does a helmet cost..and is there a poor college student helmet fund????

If you come up to the rallycross, you can persuade just about anyone to take you along. Heck, if you don't mind the stink of stale hockeygear, I'll take you in the mighty mighty OBS.

Helmets can be borrowed at the track. I'll also probably be bringing up a spare - my motorcycle helmet.

As for practicing, I don't know of anyplace where you can just go out and slide around, although Pete knows a bunch of good roads where you can drive somewhat aggressively. I personally don't like to get too aggressive on non-closed roads for two reasons; one is that you never know who's coming the other way, and the second is that without a rallycage, an "off" can have serious consequences. If you go on one of Pete's runs or you do one of his rallyes, you're probably ok though.

For my part, I'm generally discouraging "runs" since that mode of travel tends to push people into driving faster than they might be going otherwise, by comparison- in a TSD rally you should be trying to stay at an assigned average speed and since cars are all a minute apart there is less inclination to push or be pushed by others.

And it can be a fine line between aggressive and too aggresive, I had a wake-up call last year when I met an accord oncoming 20 miles back in the Mendo forest, lucky for both of us neither of us were going so fast we couldn't make any adjustments, but we were both going too fast to keep from running into each other.

Really the rally cross track is the only proper (and legal for that matter) place to "practice", although I'd point out that going up into the mountains gives you a feel for things too- as snow has a lot of the same effects on vehicle dynamics that gravel does- only more so.

the key in both cases is knowing where the limits of adhesion are and learning how and when it's appropriate to step over that line, and how to gather things back up, in gravel that happens at a lot slower speed than on Tarmac, and in snow it happens even sooner.

thanks guys i really appreciate it..I do go on aggresive runs.. That is what i do for fun..Never to fast and i call it off when its not safe. I think i may be going to the snow soon. Maybe i can find an open parking lot..2 in the morning and no cars in a parking lot is as close to a closed track as you get on my budget...
