My first time was quick...only lasted a few minutes but let me tell you that is one day i will never forget!!! I believe my first time was in Santa Cruz...i saw her in the corner of a parking lot dressed in all silver. I walked right up and gave her the rub down from end to end. Nice and smooooooth! Then i hoped in and swept her off her wheels...hehe...no it was such a nice test drive that i took her home that day and introduced her to my family and friends.(they all drooled over her too).

well i was about to throw my cash out the window on a two buck f@#$ when i saw car of the year out of the corner of my eye. so over i went to worst dealer in town and drove that bad boy all around... wow, enough with the crappy "creative ish". i got in the car, drove it, and had to have it. that simple. then i made them buy my 94 explorer that was literally about to fall apart for 4 grand and got the wagon for $200 over cost. sadly, that subie's no longer with us but her replacement is the bomb!!
long and rambling!
i had finished a 13 hour over night shift. i drove 30mins to a dealer i knew had one in stock (Mar. '01). before i went there i popped over to the audi dealer a block away and drove a TT front wheel drive, 180hp.
the audi made me feel like i was a little kid on the verge of realizing a dream. i was dug in the cockpit like an alabama tick on a hound. i sat low, with the car all around me, like the bathtub in the upstairs bathroom when i used to play auqa-man. i scanned the outward views like a cylon-raider on patrol. the world blurred behind me and only what was in front of me was in focus and i had my eyes firmly fixed on my future.
as i was returning from the test drive, it suddenly hit me that sitting a block away was an all wheel drive, turbo for 10,000 less!
they pulled the silver wrx off the showroom floor and turned it over to me. i took the same route as in the audi. compared to the pill-box view from the audi, i felt like i was sitting on top of the highest mountain, seeing everything all around me, all at once! the clutch snapped in and out, the gearbox did much the same. this was a taught rubber band of a car! further into my drive i bogged down a few times (low rpm) but then caught on - this car has a 7k redline. pulling onto the same highway on ramp that i took in the audi, i felt much more of a rush and i launched up it!
suddenly i remembered when i was 15 and read about the mazda 323 turbo awd hatchback (ironically i saw at the audi dealer all those years ago). i remembered the salesman at the time telling me how he "launched" it out of their underground garage in the wet and snow. the rush i felt with the on-ramp took on a new surge!
i don't remember taking the off-ramp back to the dealer but the next thing i do remember is signing the papers and picking the car up three days later
lets see, what else did i feel when i drove it? i was definitely more exhilerating than the audi. the sudden kick of the turbo, the spring like action of everything from the clutch/shifter/steering wheel to the blinker stalks. i felt somewhat less important than when i was in the audi, but in a good way. in a "i'm sneaking around" in an odd but uniquely stiled sedan. in a way that i could POUNCE on unsuspecting vette owners. in a way that says "it's not what's on the outside, but the inside" (i've always loved the styling but it's no pininfarina design). also, driving it was like standing on a 300lb boulder ontop of a rock slide! all the crashing and randomness going on around you but you're safe on top of the "pappa boulder" skimming along in complete control (if that makes sense). to that end, i recall reading one of the first review in C&D "it's more about a controlled loss of controll" when referring to the handling capabilities and potential of the wrx.

My first time...
I called Carlsen and made sure they had a black wagon 5mt in stock (this was March '01). They said yes, I said I will be by tomorrow. Took the day off, went in, they handed me the keys. My wife (then girlfriend) works about 2 minutes away. Picked her up, drove it like I stole it. Went back to the dealership, took a second look, wife said "yeah it's cool". She walked back to work and I bought the car.
It had 5 miles on the odo, took her to redline and never looked back. she loved it. I don't believe in the whole breakin thing.

hahaha just kidding, i think it would actually be pretty funny if your car lasted as long as the rest of ours. think how pissed you'd be if you'd putted around for those thousand insanely painful miles only to find out that you didn't need to. anyhow, great stories everybody. carry on.
36xxx miles and still going strong. I do believe in changing the oil at the 1k mark though. It's not like I was redlining it at every light or drop clutching. Just working her like a girl should be worked. At least once a day, she is taken to 6.9k.
