Completely freaked out

Had to kill a rat tonight. Been hearing noises and such in my house. Then started hearing them behind the range. So Monday I pulled it out, sure enough poop and what looks like a hang out spot. Set two mouse traps. Both had the peanut butter eaten and set off. Moved.the trap hopng to get lucky. Today I found poop under the sofa in the family room. My son almost touched it. So I'm now pissed, set 4 glue traps. Not 5 minutes later my wife and I hear thrashing. Caught the sucker. At least 7 inches long in just the body. It was trying to get free. So I killed it with a hammer. I did what was necessary but I'm still so freaked out. I used expanding foam to fill the hole, "hopefully". Now I hope that was the only one.

I had a similar experience with a skunk at my work...but we were able to let him out. Not before he sprayed his skunkness all over the place, though.

dude that ****s scary once i caught a rat about that big and it was all bloody because the traps and it was just disgusting the thing weighted a lot too

the sad part is that the trap clipped its nose/mouth so he got free but bled everywhere and tried to escape while bleeding until he just stopped and laid there

my mom likes to use the rat poison food but it sucks sometimes because they die under stoves n **** and u gotta get them out after sometimes but sometimes they just leave..

those things get big so fast they ate lots of my food and were real nimble and fast enough to come back into their hiding spot when we tried to catch them

how old is your son? if hes old enough try to explain to him not to touch it and or a dead mouse/ rat. i would honestly set some poison pellets that come in trays behind the range, rats/ mice dont usually live alone so keep an eye open, ive had mice troubles as well because my neighbors are hoarders, its gotten a little bit better though since their son moved back in with kids and he made them clean up the house as much as possible. but the poison works pretty well. seriously show no mercy to these nasty a** things.

Glad all the ones we have here are about the size of my thumb.

Sucks that they breed like rabbits though. I literally caught 9 of them in my garage in about 5 days and still about 3 months later I can hear tons more.

I'm thinking I might just use poison this time and hopefully they take it back to their nest and it kills the whole lot of them. I just don't want dead mice all over the place in the garage in places I can't get them out.

Rats are disgusting. It's a good thing you killed it. At my work, there was one rat that got trapped behind a big jug of paint and I guess got stuck there. The rat's body started to decompose against the wall and floor where it got stuck. Only thing we saw was the bones of the rat's head. Disgusting

the poison dries them out usually so they dont smell that bad when they die, unless they are really big ones

This definitely isn't true in my case. I've used them before and the garage smelled like **** for atleast 2 weeks after. Terrible, terrible smell.

yeah... dealing with rats freakin sucks. at my old house there was a hairless sucker that was running around... chased it into a bathroom and trapped it in a bag. took it out and smashed the bag into the ground then tossed it into a trash can.

then we had this fat **** that ran around. that sucker's days were numbered when it ate some rat poison my mom put out. i found it, put a bucket over it and kicked it out the door. i was going to just leave it there but you can tell it was suffering, so i dropped a brick on it. i felt so gross after that.

I used rat poison food, the rat ate it, left my house and died so no smell in my house, but very effective if you don't mind looking for the dead rat later.

If you are going to do this option, hide it somewhere out of reach of your son. Wear gloves before you open the container because the scent from your hands will scare the rat away. Good luck!

My brother had a situation where they had a bunch of rats, they also have a swimming pool so the rats would go there for water.

Long story short, if you feed rats poison that makes them thirsty, don't be surprised when you find a few in the pool.

Try setting up a watering hole for them outside, let them get used to drinking from it, then use the poison that dries them out. Theoretically they'll turn to that source for water and die outside and near it.

I'd steer clear of the rat poison. You have kids. You did the right thing and it works.
Doing what you did is much better then rushing your kid to the hospital because he ate some rat poison. Kids have a built in radar for doing what you do not want them to do.

So please.... No rat poison

Sucks about the hammer part. My buddy used to put them in zip lock bags and put them in the freezer. It worked for him. And I still give him crap about it.

I'd do a walk around with your house and clear all brush and anything around the house that's close to your walls. That's where they start and then coming into your house next. You get that sorted and you will not have to do any of the above.

Good Luck...

If that doesnt work, I can bring the 50bmg and we can go hunting.

He put LIVE rats(or dying) in a freezer to kill them rather than killing them on the spot? I think he may have passive cryogenically frozen the rats. They'll be back, with a vengeance!

My son is not yet 2. So difficult to explain to him cause he's still curious. We had Clark come out and he searched and didn't find a nesting area where its been hanging out. I went around sealing up the outside holes and left this one until last night. Hopefully the expanda foam I sprayed there creates a good enough barrier. I didn't want to take the chance it would eat the poison and die in the wall.
