Not too sure about that. Here's a quote from some guy interviewed by cnn:

But Consumers Union spokesman Chris Murray told CNNfn the merger could lead to higher prices and poorer service for cell phone customers. "We can expect to see fewer deals and higher prices, just as we've seen with the mergers of cable companies," Murray said.

GDB_Dragun: Cingular and AT&T both use GSM phones, you can get GSM phones unlocked to work with any carrier, so in the future AT&T GSM phones will be useable with the Cingular Network, as they are now through roaming agreements.

I have a Samsung X105 with T-Mobile (owned by Cingular), and it works great, around the BA, and in different states too.

I have AT&T right now and I have always gotten great coverage, in Sac and in Vegas and will traveling between the two. I am glad Cingular bought them out though because I want a better/cheaper plan and I like their phones better.

hmmm...i read somewhere that you can get out of your contract without early termination fees because of the merger. is this true? i'm with at&t and have been thinking about going to verizon but i am still under contract.

Speaking of Cell phones...

What plan do you have? I've been with Cingular for like 6 years and I think it's time for me to upgrade my plan...lately I've been going over my minutes and it's been costing me lots of $$

hahahahaha. you're kidding right? when i had cingular, i could not complete 1 phone call over 1 minute the entire year i had them. I never understood why everyone in socal had cingular. My gf HAD t-mobile. she NEVER had reception ANYWHERE. now she switched to AT&T GSM, which apparently doesnt have ANY reception at my house. (AT&T pre-GSM had full reception at my house)
