the only cool thing about this will be the different rates and new phones that ATT never used

AT&T lagged on ditching their analog & TDMA networks, and converting to GSM.
Cingular/T-Mobile has a great GSM network, and this is the technology the rest of the world uses, so you will be on a better network, and more and more phones will be able to be used in the U.S. in time.
Plus your rates will go down...
