Change in state ref regulations regarding swaps?
When a car passes, the state ref issues your car a "new" VIN sticker that goes on the door jam with the information of what year the motor is and what not.
Something like this:

Also, I'm pretty sure the ref stations aren't closed. Didn't someone here go to the livermore ref station recently to get his RS with an 07 STi swap BAR'd?

I got dinged there for not having an airpump, but it's an easy fix to put one in I just have to find space to fit one. Me == a dingleberry for forgetting that
If you're worried about issue with your displacement going from 2.5 to 2.0 or any other hate, I suggest compiling an argument (on paper) that the engine swap is complete and emissions legal for the engine model year with good backup information.
The BAR can be brutally rigid or very flexible, if given reason to be. If you need any help with the swap let me know.
I thought someone just said in another thread that they were open and doing business on Tuesdays & Thursdays? Seemed like there was one at Evergreen college and somewhere else, but the one in Alameda is supposed to be pretty friendly.

That was me, and it's a wrx not an sti. They're absolutely still open, although I'm not sure of the frequency it may have changed.

Edit: Nevermind. I did a search and I guess the 06 and 07 wrxs had air pumps. I thought the only subaru that had an air pump was the 08 STIs.

yeah, it's for the best I have been meaning to put the '07 security system in and wiring cruise control, and now I'm pro at getting the heater core in and out.
Prolly be a month before I brave the ref again.

Hello BAIC, as I'm nearing completion on my swap (99 2.5RS -->2.0 WRX motor) I get a text message from my friend today that says: "Apparently you can only have direct replacement engines..." and "some people got rejected with their swaps this week. You might wanna look into it."
So I went on www.bar.ca.gov but didn't find any updates to their engine change policy/rules. Does anyone have any info on this? I'm really starting to worry since I already merged the harnesses together.

here's a quick question... i'm doing a swap on my 86 Mr2 (engine from an 88 Celica GTS). does it cost anything to purposely take it to the ref to have it inspected and legalized?

$8.25
And you only have to pay that if you pass inspection. Otherwise it's no charge and wasted time.
To add to the update, apparently it's a visual only inspection; there will not be a smog check needed. Having been to the ref two times already, trust me on this; I'm on a first name basis with the ref.

perfect!!!
i've had the engine fully rebuilt by a machinist. that engine is tighter spec'd than when it came off the factory floor back in 1988. what i've heard, is that they go super in depth and do everything possible to check the engine, short of ripping it apart...
is this info i've been given false?

completely and utterly falso.
the ref has alldata, the usual mitchell books and a code scanner at his disposal, as well as lots of working knowledge.
what they don't have is time to waste, factory service manuals, or xray vision.
CA schedules their day helluve tight so if there's no glaring problems or ommisions you're good.
Otherwise you'll end up like me and have to return multiple times to get the o.k.
As to the actual depth of inspection, I'm going to say checking relay functionality is as far they'll go.
Goodluck with the swap, but you should've gone twincharged MR6!!

Fuel rails and fuel pressure regulators are also iffy.
technically anything that gives you more fuel and can change timing is illegal... even cams. But like the man said... they don't have xray vision.
