I would be all for this. Majority of people on this forum would have not have to worry about roadside tests

/me stares at the catless people

SHAME ON YOU

but in all honesty, this would help get rid of the anual smog checks (which are rather useless). Now lets work on getting rid of visual tests and only worry about what the car actually puts out, not what is bolted on !

I'm all for the emissions limit. And doing away with the visual inspection crap.

Imagine if they grouped all the cars under one limit. Either all SUV's get failed or we get to have their emission limit...

I bet they make alot of money with fines on the project btw...it's all about the numbers.

There is a new SB in the works that will get rid of the smog exempt for 30+ year old cars. The new SB basically requires any car newer than 1976 to stay in compliance with factory smog hardware. How much does that suck?

Also, I am not sure how these white van sensors work. What exactly are they looking for when you drive by? Co2? hydrocarbons? What sensors do they have that would pick this up as you DRIVE by? They'd have to be pretty sensative, or you have got to be buring raw crude oil for them to pick it up.

Most of the newer cars, even without cats, burn cleaner than many of the older cars. Fuel injection maks a BIG difference.

not only that, but how does the van tell WHICH car is the "gross polluter", when a group of 5 or 6 cars drives by at the same time? Seems to me, that there will be lots of people that get blamed for being a gross polluter when in reality they aren't, simply because some hoopty drove by at the same time as them. Seems like some jenky money making scheme to me. Our gov't is so F*CKED up....I swear....the term "Free Country" basically has no meaning anymore, Thanks to our over controlling government sticking their nose into people's personal lives, then justifying it by saying its to keep us "safe" from terrorism........That worked really well for 9-11 , IMHO.

shoot I think it's a good idea of they can get this too work.

I mean for the most part I highly doubt that your car running catless properly tuned is gonna put off enough toxins to **** this thing off.....I'd venture to guess that in the final stages they will be forced to make them less sensitive or they will be having tons of people come in..pass smog and they'll start to loose money and get terrible press and they'll be forced to pull the system....like the red light cameras.

I would hope that they would be set up to catch that guy driving a 76 benz with a black rear end spitting out more **** than you can see through. or that van or truck spewing crap out all over the place...or that dirty honda running with a cleary blown head gasket gasing everyone around him.

I can't stand that crap.

I've worked on 475hp V8's and had my civic camed and what not...I never had problems like that. I was reading an article the other day...there is so much polution in Los Angeles...I used to live in Riverside....it's freaking terrible man. We are lucky here because so much gets carried out to the bay. I think LA county or san bernardino is a perfect place to test this technology.

Mind you I am very anti big brother. I hate red light cameras. Speed sensitive stop lights. Cameras in the sky. Crap like that...I think it's all more bull crap. More ways for big brother to keep us in line. Take away our rights to have fun driving. Take away our right to defend...don't get me started..this issue drives me nuts.

BUT...BUT....I do see a need for them to do something with the gross poluters. Black smoke cars...etc...the real bad ones...if this does that fine. But if this lets them go right on by while it's nailing guys like us that could probably pass most sniffer tests then it's a joke.

Personally I think they need to start with themselves. Gov vehicles are all smog exempt...including police cars. Look at buses....and city park vehicles...they are the worst poluters out of all of us.

So I am curious to see how this works....if it catches the right people then good for them.

Well said, and I totally agree with you....and yes, like you said, they NEED to start with THEMSELVES (Gov't, State, City vehicles) Because, nearly every single day the City Landscapers come take care of the area around my work (trim tree's in the parking lot, blow dust all over my car with their stupid leaf blowers, and keep the area clean.) But when they get back into their jaloppy towing a trailer, and start that puppy up....POOF, the thing spits out all kinds of isht out the tailpipe. I am like to them, because that is a blatant gross polluter, but is smog exempt because its a city truck.....WTF? Talk about a double standard.

Also, as edgar said, I am willing to do my part.....but everyone else (incl. gov't vehicles) need to do their part too.....why should WE, the citizens, that pay these a$$holes salaries have to make our cars "cleaner" when alot of the problem lies with the cities, states, and gov'ts that dont have to smog their vehicles.

I saw one of these road side stations last Thursday in Sacramento. I was on my way to TPD trailers with RS TURBO to pick-up my trailer. We were on Fruitridge road (industrial area) and drove by a van with a dozen tripods with what looked like large radar guns pointed in varrying heights. Then we passed two CHP's and a roadside dyno rollers (2wd only) and a truck with smog equiptment.

I was happy I was picking up the trailer and not driving the catless suby that day. Yeah, a trailer queen now. Good timing though.

There are signs as you lead up to the checkpoint, though they don't make much sense.

Like I said in my post, there were two CHP cars parked just past the station with the dyno and equiptment. Yeah, the dyno will not work for us, but the visual inspection and the fact you still have dealer paper plates will be your demise.
