That sucks. I saw three officers with people pulled over right at the 505 - 80 West interchange this morning on the way back from my uncle's. The aircraft is the hardest thing to defend against.

Using aircraft to measure speed is a speed-trap. Illegal.

So is driving above the posted speed limit!

BTW, where did you study California vehicle laws? Pacing by either vehicle or aircraft is legal.

pacing, yes, but planes don't pace, they measure the time it takes to go from one point to another and determine average speed that way. A ticket given in that fashion won't hold up in court if you argue it. You have to be on radar or paced by someone in another land vehicle.

That explains all the CHP I saw parked on the other side of the 101 this morning in Novato. I was wonderin what they were up to.

Now, maybe the plane is measuring that way, and then radioing ahead to the CHP on the ground and telling them to 'be on the lookout for a silver sedan' etc, but as long as you're careful and observant, it's not really much more dangerous than without planes.

Unless you keep one eye on the sky it is more dangerous. I got an 85+ on the 5 a few years back on my way to LA-LA. Rounded a bend on the freeway and the officer was just standing in my lane waving me over. I had no clue what/who/how happened until he walked over and pointed out the plane and the speed I was measured at. Dammit!!

I'm paranoid whenever I roll down the 5 now so I always keep checking the skies. But the 101? I never think to check for planes on the 101. Hell, if I'd been driving north instead of south this morning i'd be the proud new owner of another 85+ speeding ticket.
