Career for you
My neighbor's an ex-marine who is now running an electrician business, riding the free healthcare from being a gulf war I vet as well as the great pay from his "I make my own hours and work from home" job.
Military's a great career jump starter if you're a contractor. My neighbor said that beyond the free healthcare he also got some good management/leadership training from being a marine that really helped him expand his business in his civilian life. The dude is doing well for himself.
And the comments about "my ex-military friends are lazy and doing nothing with their lives" <-- well the military is just like college. It opens up doors, but it's up to you to step through them.
What exactly are the criteria for becoming a veteran and collecting the healthcare, anyways?

My buddy Jake was over there as a Blackwater guy.... was making ~$30K/month tax free.
The guy made awesome money, but a few of his buddy's got killed, and he wasted A LOT of people.
He made a life for himself with the money when he got back; but isn't sure if it was worth it
Jake was also ex-special forces which is a pre-req for pretty much any serious military contractor job

Being a marine is very much different than being in the army. For starters anyone can get through army basic training whereas you have to really want to be a marine to make it in. A lot more is expected of marines and rightfully so. They are considered one of it not the toughest and most well trained military organizations in the world.
