career paths and education...for me.
well, the topic does sound a tad bit confusing. i got accepted into san jose state univ. and cal state east bay. i applied for marketing in san jose state and mass communications in cal sate east bay....that being said, i have no idea what i want to do with my life. i know being 17 it shouldn't really be that much of a worry compared to what many of you older (though young at heart) out there. it is bothering me because i thought i wanted to get into animation and digital visual media and was set on that, but changed my mind and now am not knowing what the hell to do. should i defer my acceptances and go to a junior college until i get my siht together or just go for one of the two?
anyone have any input on this? totally not car related, but i don't know who else to chat to about this because everyone from my school seems to know where their life is headed (Moreau Catholic High School).

if you pick cal state HAYWARD, come find me in the new BUS building come fall 06, supposedly...
btw, i work with the BUS school.
but for a few years, i was also part of the tv studio at hayward and knew a lot of mass comm people there.
also, take the first year to really find out what you want. find a good advisor to help you map out your career at the school you pick. that is probably the best advice i can give to a new, incoming freshman...

Hey Mr. Wiggles, I kinda know how you're feeling. I'm a first year davis student and I'm already thinking about changing my major. I'm not sure how hard it is for you to change majors at your colleges...but if it's not that hard, go for it. Right now, I'm planning on going dental, but with my grades right now..I'm not so sure. I did alright the first quarter...but second quarter...argh. How i do the college and life thing is to just not worry too much about the future. I mean, have a plan, stick with your plan, but if things change...because...well life is always changing..go with the change...don't resist it. It'll be even better if you can anticipate change, but yeah. Another thing that helps is interning and finding part time job related to your field. If you truly love it..or atleast can endure it, go for it! But if something else interests you...research it..intern it..and decide then. You don't have to make your decision right now. There are some people who knows exactly what they want and go for it. There are those who don't and change their majors. Whatever they do, it'll turn out fine. Again, if it's easy to change your major...then just go to the better known school. I personally don't think it matters that much because you will have to go to grad school if you wanna make the big bucks. I don't know too much about those majors you've mentioned.
i was feelin the same way as you man... I started SFSU as a marketing major... quickly decided it wasn't for me. I then changed it to International Business.
anyway, you s hould definitely start out at a state schoool. you will have a much better experience of living with friends, being on your own, etc.
but, this is the most important point... your first 2 years of college are general education. you shouldn't be taking any classes towards your major. this gives u two years to think about what major you want.
a city college means itll be harder to make friends.. different experience, etc.

repetitive, but you'll get the idea...
i wouldnt go to a junior college if i didnt have to, unless you are really good at staying on schedule... i won't knock it, its cheaper and you get most of the same courses done, but it's really easy to get side-tracked at a jc, most people plan to be there 2 years end up there 3 or 4 then finally transfer to a state/univ. and their 4 year plan ends up taking 6.. haha, sad but really true for a lot of people... oh and definately don't worry that much on a major... stick with the general ed stuff for the first few years and try out a class in whatever interests you each semester, you'll find something, i changed majors like 3 times to totally different fields and im still somewhat on track to be done in the planned 4 years, well, maybe 5... but i'll still only be 22.. so chill dude.. it's the last semester of your senior year, enjoy it bro..
haha, i just realized i live down the street from your school

you should ask the SJSU alumni on this board. ask for feedback about the program (Marketing) and how well it prepares them for the job market. you can also get insight from them about how they came to their decision and if there is anything that they would change if they were to start over again.

i didn't apply to any UCs cause i honestly don't have the grades for it, 3.03 weighted GPA. ACT scores aren't exactly the best niether are my SATs. After reading your posts I realize that I don't want to run into the situation where I can't change my major or don't know what to do with the major of my choice.
Should i really just go to a jr. college and see what's up from there? i literally have NO idea what to do right now. i just don't want to find myself struggling with a major i don't like or having a hard time trying to transfer my major and what not.

I changed my major 4 times in college....Chemistry -> Econ -> COmputational Economics _ COmputer Science.
Had I been at a small, ultra specialized school, or a city college with no liberal arts side to it, I wouldn't have been able to do that, and would have been stuck. I HIGHLY recommend that if you can't get into a UC right now, that you not cut your options short with a city school. Take a couple years of JC, then transfer into a UC. You'll be able to do anything you want....You'll find it eventually.
If you KNEW, for example, that you wanted to do, say, theatre set design, I'd recommend you go to a school with a strong arts curriculum, and say who cares if they have a decent science program.
But you don't know what youwant to do, so you need a place that can expose you (and will force you to be exposed) to a wide variety - the place to do that is either a liberal arts school (which it sounds liek you dont' have the grades for - no biggie) or a larger state school (which you also say is tough). So your option is to prove yourself in Junior College, and then transfer.

lemme know, i also work with a bunch of people where they give advising on daily basis for business majors.
plus they do all of the transfers checking and stuff.
a good friend graduated from SJSU. first 2 years, he took tons of general ed classes at chabot to get them out of the way during summer.
