Car got stolen in SF. FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!
Yup, SF suuuuuuuucks for having your car towed. It got a *little* better when they ditched the goons @ City Tow, but not by much.
The registered owner has to be there in person to get the release for the car, you might be able to pay for it, and possibly get a discount if your ID shows SF residency. But she will need to be there for release paperwork over on Bryant street. Then you get to trek across town to the tow yahd, and PRAY the car wasn't damaged.
If you happen to know an SFPD officer, now would be the time to call in a favor.

I once got my car towed in the Financial district, I parked by Mixt greens cause the garage was full but a meter just opened on the street. Put money in the meter and went inside to pickup a pre-ordered salad. I couldn't have been gone 5 minutes, came back and my car was towed. I walked over to the meter and there was still 15 minutes on it, so I assumed it was stolen.
The 911 operator was very nice, thought it was stolen at first too, then about 10 minutes into the call found out it had been towed and was as flabbergasted as I was. She basically told me there's nothing that I can do other than pay for the tow and suck it up. It really doesn't matter if I was parked legally or not because the tow company claimed I was in violation. Even if I fought it, I would spend more time, money and energy trying to prove that they illegally towed me with nothing to show for it save my own irritation.
I had to run from the financial district to the tow yard at 2:30 on a friday to get my car out of lockup before they closed for the weekend. My girlfriend was with me and couldn't manage to run all 20-something blocks so I had to leave her at the mall.
**** SF Parking, I park in a garage no matter what when I go there now and always tip the lot attendant when I drop it off to keep it in a good spot. I tip them when I leave too in case I come back another time, they'll remember me.

It's good that it was just towed and not stolen. when you get the car back, check the rear lateral links. a lot of towing companies pull the car up on the bed by them and bend it. PITA to get it covered though
one time i parked in sf in a oil changers lot at 1130 at night, ran in a store and was out in less than 5 to see my car gone. cell was in the car, asked a guy sitting in his car and he told me i got towed and let me use a cell. It was a ****ty situation thank god for that dude, even tho he looked sketch he was cool. had 10 bucks cash and payed a taxi to take me to the tow place under the agreement all i had was 10, got there as my car got in. Same time, lame. Tried to say 350 cash only, wtf? so finally allowed me to use my debit. Saw a thing on the news that described this happening in sf and said I was entitled to twice my money back from the place, but after spending an hour trying to call sfpd about it I gave up.
isn't that highly illegal?? i would assume there would've been a good amount of lawsuits against the city
with so many occurrences, i know my attorneys would have a field day with this
