I think my car almost got stolen last night (and I stopped it)
[I'm a super hero, I know]
Earlier tonight I went grocery shopping at a Safeway near my work. I usually buy a weeks worth of food there and stash it in the fridge for eating when hungry. This Safeway is in a pretty crappy part of town. It's not horrible, but it's pretty bad.
So I'm walking out to my car, pushing my cart full of yummy food and I see this guy walking towards my car. My car is parked pretty far from the store and he's maybe 20 feet away, walking towards it and putting on a pair of gloves. He gets about 5 feet away and looks down the aisle, seeing me walking up. He stops walking and sort of looks around again, then waits for me to get there and launches in to this story:
He lost his job about 14 months ago.
He lives in a motel 6 with his daughter (room 226).
He's $13 short for his rent this month.
I could call the hotel to verify his staying there, or even his parole officer (I think I know how he lost his job).
So as he's telling me all of this - about how he is a concerned parent with his daughters best interest in mind, he puts a cigarrette in his mouth. He's wearing a clean (not dirty or torn or ****ed up, it fits too) tshirt and clean jeans and clean white hi-top shoes. His gloves are pretty nice.
I'm loading my car listening to him, about how poor he is and how he just can't have his daughter living on the streets when..........[HIS CELL PHONE RINGS and he answers it on his headset.]
So obviously this story was a ****ty replacement for "Well, I was going to jack your car till you had to walk up", but the cell phone thing was good stuff. Maybe I should have waited to see if he jacked my car so I could get an STi.

edgar,
Stashing food in the fridge is a great idea. I do that too.
Seems like a pretty dumb theif to try and steal a bright yellow new car from a Safeway parking lot, then not noticing the owner coming toward him loaded down with items. It's hard to be sneaky with Safeway bags and/or a shopping cart.
Either way, that's pretty freaky. I would have made it clear that I didn't want to hear about what he was talking about.. But honestly it's hard to say what would happen in a situation like that. Things happen pretty quickly or are at least confusing..
Of course.. I wouldn't mind someone stealing my car as long as they totalled it.

what an igit. I have run into those guys a few times. Its like the new fad. They wander around parking lots with some sob story abou them and their kids. Or their car broke down. etc. Trying to get some cash. I am a sap. I got suckered once for a few bucks...but then it kept happening and happening and happening...and I was like damn leaches. My brother had someone do that to him. Even told him he'd come by his work and pay him back soon. My brother saw the guy on the freeway driving a lexus about a week later.
Glad nobody jacked your car...trust me...if you have any mods or stereo equipment...it's more trouble than it's worth. I've had my stereo stolen a couple times and a couple attempts on my car.

What do you mean by stashing food in the fridge? You just put it there, that's what the fridge is for. Are you hiding it from someone?
Anyways, you should consider contacting your local police department and give them a description of the guy. OBVIOUSLY someone who would steal one car has stolen others, so maybe your information could help them out with other stolen cars. You should have punked the guy.

I usually have some ice cream item, so I put my food on the top shelf and make sure the dinner stuff is in front of all the ice cream stuff. I'd have to choke a ***** if my ice cream got jacked
