Subaru can throw in better pistons from the factory to make the engine more capable.

I actually think part of the reason they're doing this is to alleviate the ringland issue. The smaller bore 2.0l's never had much of an issue with this.

Wooo! I see oil filter on top? Do you think it will make less mess? If so, I like it.

Here's from the article:

The intake manifold is plastic, like the outgoing EJ’s (save the cast-aluminum unit on the STI), but this new manifold incorporates four tumble-generation valves, one just upstream of each port. They look like half of a throttle valve and, through electronic control, manipulate the intake flow to maximize efficiency.

I've heard from just about everyone that the plastic ones are better stock for stock than the metal ones. I guess the temps stay lower and the plastic is actually better flowing due to less resistance (Don't know the truth on that last one) but I hear that the plastic intake manifold isn't done just for $$ savings, it also saves weight, and increases performance. It may look like absolute **** but Subaru always does function over form.

That's just how they manage to get a longer stroke out of the motor without changing the external dimensions.
