If I remember doesn't the front airbag only go off if you involved in a frontal impact?

When my RSX was raped from behind by an Escalade my front airbag did not go off. I was parked at a red light and 3 min later she slammed into me, forcing me into the middle of the intersection with oncoming traffic getting off of 280 coming right at me. No airbags.

I think maybe thats why it did not go off, but I am not positive.

Man, sue happy californians

Some knowledge for you

Frontal airbags are ONLY designed to go off when you get hit something WITH THE FRONT OF YOUR CAR going 25mph or higher. Its a one-way accelerometer, so getting hit in the rear does not produce the same direction of acceleration as hitting something in the front. Even hitting the something with the front corner of your car may not produce enough acceleration to set them off. They were designed this way for a reason, because when airbags were first made, they would go off at inopportune times, resulting in death/injuries that were unrelated to the accident.

Trust me, automotive engineers are not stupid, the accelerometers they use are incredibly accurate and dead on. Airbag design has been around for 20 years now, they know what they are doing.

And you didn't pay extra for those airbags, at least not the frontal ones, as they are required by federal law. And side airbags only go off when the SIDE of the car is hit, which would force your body towards the door. If your body is not traveling towards the door and a side airbag goes off, it could break your neck and burn your face when it wont even do anything for you since the acceleration isnt even in that direction

So if you are going to hire a lawyer and sue someone, sue the person who hit you, not Toyota because they will embarrass you in court with butt loads of facts and data to support why it did not deploy, then you will lose and be hit with a counter suit to cover their legal fees, which you will likely lose and be forced to pay 5x more than the scion is worth.

If I were you I'd just be happy that your sister didn't suffer any major injuries.

Some seatbelt rash, a sore leg and a little bump on her head. Sounds like she basically walked away?

Airbags were created to keep the steering wheel from collapsing your chest and killing you.

Sounds like that didn't even almost happen. Be glad her airbags didn't go off, they would have probably broke her nose, left burns/rash on her face, and depending on how she was holding onto the steering wheel might have broken her arms/wrist.

It's not a nice fluffy pillow.

no airbags for rear impact................generally with the newer cars if they don't go off in the situation.................they probably woulda hurt you pretty bad if they did. Recently my friend sent my 05 sti into a tree at a good rate of speed. No airbags deployed even tho a side impact. Didn't get hurt at all, probably would have gotten knocked out if they did go off.

keep in mind it was about 25k+ in damages.

I would rather the airbag in my accident not go off.. the force of me hitting the bag the bag broke and threw me into windshield anyhow. At first the accident the seat belts worked but once the airbag went off our seat belts went limp and they no longer worked after that. They said thats also a safty feature to make sure seatbelts are changed when the car gets fixed. My accident didnt look to bad but 29k of damage in the end.

Hope your sister makes it out ok. Get a lawyer is the best i can say. My parents had a car and no safety features worked so they had to sue the manufacturer.

think if it went off, imagine getting hit from the rear hard and jolted forward while at the very same time having a bag of dynamite explode pushing you the other way. I dont think that would be good, never heard of bags helping rear impact

Air bag sensors should only be triggered for direct front impacts and side direct impacts.

If she has not already she needs to go to the hospital to be checked out.

I was rearended back in july I think.

I was stopped at a light with my subaru. Lady in x5 bmw hit the back of my car doing 55mph. She never hit her brakes.

I had both 1/4 pannels trunk pan , bumper and so on replaced. It also broke my drivers seat in two places. No I'm not fat. I weigh 190 lbs being 6ft 2. I lost vision in my left eye. Not fun one bit.
I was in and out of the ER for two weeks. 6 cat scans and 5 MRI's and still having neck and back problems, loss of memory, vision

If it wasnt for my carbon fiber trunk, I'd be even more jacked up. It took a huge hit and absorbed alot of it.

They dont have to sue them.. Why? Stuff like that dries up the prices of the cars. Think I'll sue Subaru because my seat broke and caused some of my injuries?

B.T.W. I had over 15k in damage done to my car.

i had a similar situation where i kinda lost all chances of dating this chick.

we used to be co-workers and she knew i liked their family car that she and her sister drove.

so one day she met and she told me that the truck was totaled when her father was in an accident.

i think my first response was something like "oh no... that truck was nice" or something stupid.

she told me that the truck was gone. then suddenly said, "oh and my father is OKAY..."

oops... that was it for me.

lesson learned.
