there are sensors for airbags, depending on where the car was hit. It may not have triggered any of the sensors.

if this was me and the officer said it should have gone off. I would take a ton of pics, document everything that happened in case your sister has long term health issues.

If she didn't have her seatbelt on and the airbags did go off, the bags likely would have killed her.

The airbags likely didn't go off because the accelerometers are designed only to look for G's from specific angles where the airbag deploying would be useful. This wreck may not have created enough G's in those angles which means that airbags going off likely wouldn't have helped much anyway.

Glad to hear she's okay. Was the offending driver insured?

i would read the owner's manual on what the conditions are in order for the bags to deploy.

i remember when i first got my wrx in 2001, i got the owner's manual before getting the car.

so when they called me, i had to ride BART to get to the dealer. i read the manual and there was a section on how/why the airbags worked.

for example, a side impact wont set off the front bags. also, a certain amount of speed must be sensed by the accelorometers before setting them off.

all sorts of conditions...

Yeah, has to be specific conditions.

Is the girl who was driving really short? That would explaian why she hit the windshield... I wouldn't have.

These cars go under EXTENSIVE testing to ensure that they don't go off when they don't need to.

It didn't used to be that way and air bags killed people. Shoot I saw a dude side swipe another car years ago...talking a NOTHING accident...an oh **** my bad accident. Air bag went off. Blinded the dude and busted his nose. I had to carry the kid out of the accident myself.

It might be worth while to talk to a lawyer as it does sound like this is a case of a malfunction.

Still don't get how she hit the windshield with a seat belt on. Aren't they suppose to hold you in place?

The scion screens are pretty far away aren't they?

haaaaaaaaaa.

I think it was the side impact he was expecting...maybe?

in rear end accidents the front air bags aren't suppose to go off...don't think any airbags are suppose to go off...that's why so much energy is put into designing safe seats these days.

I had an 06 TC and had front impact damage at 40+ mph. My hands were gripping the steering wheel as hard as my brakes holding onto the rotors as it screeched for almost what seems like forever. The front of the tC smashed in while the airbags deployed (seatbelt was on). The length of my head and the steering wheel was about 18-20 inches. My head never touched the airbag as it deployed and flatten out because of the windshield cutting it. However my side (extra option) airbags did not go off. I'm guessing the only time when the sides or front air bags go off is when you get into front end or direct T-bone.

Here's an idea...give your sister a big hug and say "I'm glad you're ok."

Are you serious?

On topic, impact included front and rear so I and a few others are surprised airbag didn't go off. Good idea about checking the owners manual- checking that right now. I'm just concerned a bit because it could've been worse. Maybe you guys are right, it could be that the impact was not hard enough or on point to go off. If you saw the vehicle you'd question it yourself. I'd say the vehicle is practically totalled. We will have to wait on the adjuster and see what he says. The most important thing is that she is okay, eventhough she is without her baby (refering to her car) she babied that thing.

You should post pics so we can see where the damage is.

sounds pretty bad, good thing she wasn't seriously hurt.
this is kind of off topic but i'm just wondering if she is responsible for the damage caused to the other car? or is the original guy that hit her responsible?
