Training
Standing still, not worrying about being shot at, and having no time limit anyone can hit just about anything with a little training. I was at our rifle range nailing 100yd metal silhouettes with my .40 Glock. (gotta aim a little high)
But we all know what happens when you add a little stress to the situation. Add enough stress and even with my HK416 (primary) I'll miss a headshot while on the move from 15yds out. And I've put in a lot of time putting tons of lead down range.
A common misconception that many novices make is that a laser is going to help them shoot somehow. IMO it's a completely useless device. If you're going to buy a weapon for defensive purposes, learn how to shoot it. It does after all grant you the power to immediately end the life of another human being. The responsible thing to do is become an expert in yielding such power. Training, training, training. Spend all your spare cash on courses related to combat shooting and gun safety.
I'd go with a .45 for home defense. (If you prefer a pistol over a 12 gauge). I use an HK USP. Big heavy round that has a less chance of over penetrating if you miss your target. Nobody wants to kill their neighbor when they're trying to drop a badguy. I'm such a kill joy...

From my killing experience:
.357 Magnum is in & out of a body before proper expansion has occured, resulting in an undead and very pissed off target.
.45ACP is a one shot dropper round.
Test subjects were ~40lb bobcats.

Here is my first love, a Glock 21 with M6 laser/light combo with hogue rubber grip. You can substitute the Glock 21 (.45ACP) for a Glock 17 (9mm), or even .40 models. This is my favorite pistol out of any pistol I've ever fired, even pistols that cost 3x more. Not only the most reliable auto pistol on this planet, it's also super rugged, and very accurate in the hands of the right shooter.
Some will say that Glocks aren't accurate, but that's a bunch of BS, it comes down to the fact that they don't know how to shoot a glock. I started on Glocks and I'm the best with them. Pistols vary greatly from each other, as do shooters. Everyone is different so I suggest going to the shooting range and renting a few pistols to see which one you like best.
I'll even give you an offer. If you buy the ammo, I'll take you to the range and you can use my pistols and see what you like the best. From 9mm to .45, and I know you think .45's have more recoil, but thats not the case... it all depends on the pistol. My glock .45 has less recoil then my Glock 17 (9mm). There's a reason for this but I'm too lazy to explain... hahah.
Anyway, here's my Glock 21 in .45acp
(sorry for the annoyingly large photo)

sigh...
ding ding ding!!!!!! we have a winner
plus it's illegal... if loaded.
hmmm... lemme guess... you were at a range. nicely lit range. taking your time at each squeeze of the trigger... and no on shooting back at you or someone running away... right?
another winner...
i think the OP has seen too many movies lately.
dude. i'm not not trying to make fun of you or anything. but using a firearm should be considered a LAST RESORT.
and even then, you should still think about using something else.
self defense is a mindset. you just dont buy a gun and a couple boxes of ammo and go to the range.
that is called shooting practice.
self defense means using any and all means to avoid having being in that place in the first place.
remember, kalifornia DOES NOT have a HOME IS YOUR CASTLE law unlike other states. but it does have a big set of laws about self defense.
Secondly, you talked about driving home and burglars running out the back door. Do you plan on carrying your piece in your car? Im 100% pro-gun, but it seems like you want it for the wrong reasons. home defense is one thing, but if you leave it at home... guess what the burglars are going to take with them.... and when you arrive home unarmed..... guess what they have waiting.

You better hit a vital organ or the brain.
I've read many cop stories on Gunatics.com with testimonials of this pistol. Basically all of them said the same thing, it put a .22 hole through the suspect, a very precise one.
One cop shot a suspect through the neck, and somehow the round failed to hit any vital areas and put a perfect .22 hole right through his neck. The guy lived and is now in prison. I really wanted to get one of those guns because of how easy they are too shoot, and the claimed ballistics of the round, but I guess you have to hit a bone for the round to do it's job, otherwise it's a tiny hole right through the flesh. Oh, and the ammo costs make me want to kill myself.
But I'd have to shoot a vital organ to do that.
If ammo wasn't so expensive, I'd probably get one anyway because they are really cool.
But since I'm poor and can't afford ammo for my .22's, I def can't afford those rounds...

The best mindset is to never count on using my gun, it's there just in case plan A - Z fail, every option must be exercised before you take action with a firearm.
You must think about what the defense attorney will bring to the table when your *** is in the hot seat, and in case you've never seen attorneys at work, they are VERY persuasive and will clean you out. So unless you did try everything possible to protect yourself, and everything failed, only then should you use a firearm to stop the threat.
When I say plan A-Z, I mean to use any reasonable method to stop the threat, but if the suspect has a gun and is coming after you and you have a pistol, you basically exercised A-Z instantly and went for your last resort to protect your life against a threat that is greater than any other option you have.
Especially here in CA, self defense laws are such a joke. You can't defend yourself unless the perpetrator is ABOUT TO KILL YOU, if you shoot him on the side or back, they will argue that he wasn't a threat to you and you will go to prison.
