can i fit 8.5 wide rims on my stock wrx?

yes.
48 offset.
255 you will need to roll the rears.

53 offset works too, but you may need a 5 mil spacer in the rear.

ugh i really don't want to roll fenders... maybe i'll stick to 8 then.

I have some 5mm spacers I don't need anymore. 255/40-17 on 17x8.5 SSR GT2's sticks out almost 2" on my '95 coupe. It's hacksaw time. And time for smaller tires.

whats the offset of the wheels are you looking at? More than likely you wont need a roll, what size tires were you planning on running too? a 235/40/18 would work fine for you or a 245/35/18.

I had some x9's with a 235 and only had to roll the rears on my bugeye. Lowered on STi Tarmac struts and Progress springs.

Depends on specific tires... some r wider than others.
