They've been doing this in SoCal for years. I've never seen a roadside emissions test anywhere up here though.

Frankly, I don't really get why people get all freaked out about it. It's not like they can put AWD cars on their dyno anyways...

If it's on the freeway this is what to do.

1. Gain some speed before the survey area.
2. Turn the car off (but not all the way so you don't lock the steering wheel)
3. wizz on by with the traffic.
4. Turn the car back on and be off!

That could actually work, since the majority of us drive manual.

hmmmmmmm. random my butt.

it does say participation is not mandatory. so if you get pulled over you can say no????

so what you fail...you get a ticket...wtf???? or they pull you over the the "test" and then give you a ticket for whatever that's unrelated? like no front plate or something like that?

what a bunch of bull.

Are they gonna have AWD dynos?

You could probably just push the clutch in and idle past and be just fine.

At the conclusion of each test, the driver receives a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) detailing the results. The report may not be substituted for a vehicle's official Smog Check.

Well that sucks... No free Smogs.

Your modified wrx gets pulled over by CHP.

CHP: Hi there, I want to include you in our new emissions survey that we're doing.

You: I'd rather not, sorry.

CHP: Ok, since u decided not to participate, I can't force you to take the survey. But I do notice you have what looks like illegal modifications to your vehicle (probable cause). Since you elected not to participate in our survey, are you trying to hide something? Please pop your hood.

You get pwned with a bunch of tickets.

ive seen these alot in stockton and around the valley... lucky for me ive never been in my car when it was cattless

but because of these damn things im now running stock, cause they do impound and ticket you on the spot via chp officer if your in violation, and yes they do target imports and old cars

here is a pic from a while back... this was right off hwy 99 at a popular exit with lots of restaurant and gas stations
