Forgive me, but it's lane SHARING, not splitting. There is a legal difference, and sharing is mentioned in CVC. I agree with your post, but wanted to mention that because people have gotten in trouble for saying "splitting" when they meant "sharing" as silly as it sounds (it's only silly if you have never spoken to a "peace officer."). My general rule is to NOT, unless cars are stopped or I must, but then it's like you say - no more than 10 over and once traffic hits 30mph or so, I am back in line. I ride a '92 CB750, air cooled, and it has had me concerned a couple times in the summer. What gets me is when I am cruising along in the HOV lane at say 60mph and some douche passes me like I am sitting still - seen people nearly hit cars, and one guy at least 2-3 times a week in the AM between Marsh Rd. and Embarcadero, on a 954, with a teeny little kid on the back whipping past me going at least 75 or so... So sad...
By the way - your comment: "Always ride defensively and keep as much space as you can between yourself and the cars out there." is really key. Ride like everyone is trying to kill you. They are - they just don't know it.

I only do so if the cars are at or near a dead stop and to avoid having to be at a full stop on a highway myself. I refuse to sit at the tail of a traffic jam counting the seconds until someone slams into me from behind. The rear silhouette of a motorcycle is easy to lose when there are much larger objects for the eye to see.
As far as retaliating against cars... only a handful of times have I done so and every one of those times involved a driver purposely risking my life. Example - creeping traffic, maybe 5mph. A friend and I were riding from San Diego back to Orange County. Going about 10mph lane sharing. Approach a van and I see him check him mirror. He sees us and as we are almost at his bumper he swings as fast towards us as he can. We stop. He moves back over. Every time we attempt to get by he tries to pinch us between his van and the car next to him. He finally gets stuck and we get by, but I admit to being to angry that I did break the mirror on the van. Am I proud of that? No, not really. In that situation someone was purposely trying to cause myself and my friend harm. Similar things have happened more than once.
99% of the time people just don't see you. You have to be ready for that. It doesn't mean they should be punished, though and a lot of times you simply scare them and add to their hate for motorcycles, but also run the risk of causing a much greater accident.
Interesting thread anyhow. Makes me want another bike.
Not only do you have to ride defensively, but you also have to ride offensively. Whenever any of my friends tells me that they want to get a bike, I evaluate what kind of driver they are--and if they are a timid car driver, I tell them that motorcycles are not for them. A timid biker is a dead biker.

I bet the guy who took the photo would have been just as mad if the subie driver didn't swerve and give him ZERO room, getting super close to the photographer. I bet the guy just wanted to whine because the guy was in a car, aka "cager".
I don't know why some motorcyclists ***** and whine about cars no matter where/what/who... It tends to be those bike "clubs" that are more like bike gangs (sport bikers) from what I've experienced. I have a lot of friends who ride and ALL of them will rip on you just because you drive a car. I can understand not liking cars on the freeway and stuff where people dont pay attention, but even then, they are the ones splitting lanes and hauling ***... Why do they get so bent about cars on twisty roads? We stay in our lanes much more then they stay in their lanes! Most people who ride can't ride worth a damn and constantly cut corners, etc, etc... They act like they are holier then thou, like they don't do any of that sort of stuff which is TOTAL BS.
I hate people who drive in your lane on roads like that, especially since my last accident was from that exact reason, but I am still going to defend that subie driver. Yeah, he overcompensated a bit more then he should have, but you know that most of us as well as them would have done the same for the photographer's safety. I'd be worried if people didn't swerve at all especially in clear conditions like that where you can see whats in front of you.
Also, that biker is standing in a REALLY bad spot, reminds me of those rally fans in Europe that stand on the outside if the corner in great numbers... It's a great way to get pwn3d by a car. If some car was hauling *** and lost control that guy wouldn't be posting.
So, in short:
-A lot of bikers think they are holier then thou and act like they never cross lanes which is BS!!!
-Bikers complain about car drivers (AKA: Cagers) yet they are the ones splitting lanes, weaving between lanes while hauling ***, and yet we ("cagers") are the bad ones
They think they own the road, I wish there were more laws against bikers so they can no longer split lanes, etc... When I'm in DENSE traffic where there is hardly ANY room between the car next to mine and yet they still pass us like we're standing still, that sort of crap really freaks me out and makes me angry that they can even do that! What the hell?
-The subie driver was making room for the photographer, we all would have done the same but probably not as much as he did.

Whoops, forgot the disclaimer!
When I refer to bikers, I'm not referring to all of them, some bikers are really responsible and don't fall into that category, but there is still a large number of them that give bikers a bad name.

Wow. What is wrong with you?
With many years of riding under my belt, I can tell you that in an accident involving a car, rarely is it the fault of the biker. Ride on two wheels some time and you'll quickly learn that you're a lot more careful and conscientious without a metal cage protecting you. There are of course exceptions (see: squids), which are probably the ones you're basing your ridiculous generalization on.
I can't believe you would wish harm on someone, much less for something ridiculous like you've done above. I say this sincerely: please seek professional help, you have some serious deep-seated problems.

2)I am sick and tired of seeing the retards that ride around, lanespliting at 80mph, stopping on blind curves, doing dumb stuff like wheelies down the freeway.

You CAN NOT hesitate on a bike. My gf always asks me if if she should get a scooter for around the city, and I tell her every time that she can't second guess lane changes, hit the brakes in the middle of a lane change, etc. like she does in a car.
She still hasn't gotten a scooter, thankfully.

if you research it you will find most motorcycle deaths are caused by failure to give right of way to motorcycles (ie - turn left across intersection while motorcycle is going straight, turn left into a parking lot with a motorcycle comming from the other way)
edit: btw my bike tops out at 100 (full tuck, half tank)
and yes the morons ruin it for everyone else just like the guy in the picture from this thread.

I'm just here to post a site that I found after i googled "most motorcycle deaths are caused by"

Almost half (about 46 percent) of fatal motorcycle crashes are single vehicle.
In 2003, fifty two percent of fatally injured motorcycle riders were unhelmeted.

The Readers Digest summary: Motorcycle fatalities tend to occur in (mostly) men who are:
---Young (20 - 29 years old)
---Drunk (40% of deaths)
---Unlicensed (25% of deaths)
---Not wearing a helmet (52% of deaths)
Avoid all of the above categories and motorcycling is relatively safe.

Anyone that wants to witness idiotic bikers, come down here to Monterey for the bike race weekend and just camp out up on Laureles Grade. You'll get to see them cutting corners on a non so desolate road. Not only that, you'll get to see them doing wheelies in traffic too!
I've had bikers draft me on the highway and on the twisty road I used to live on. Then I get to look our for my safety AND theres because if I have to slam on my breaks, guess who is going to fly over my car and get intimate with the deer in the middle of the road?
There are responsible bikers too! There are tons of them! I have no problem with them! I have always been anti-idiot. If anyone wants to misapply my disgust for morons to an entire population that contains a sample of morons, go for it. But don't try to make a point or argue against the misapplication.

i love those things, i always see one on CL and want to buy one!
LeMans used to do mini supermoto days, they had all kinds of bikes, those minis, and even 2 stroke 80cc supermotos.
They used the indoor and outdoor track, all 1 track.
