Hmmm...I'm still debating between an XD and XD-M. I'm sure so far I want the .40 but not the service or tactical model.

Hm, have you considered the Glock 35? It's a 5" .40 S&W, but with a barrel & mag swap, you can also shoot 9mm or .357 sig.

You inspired me to try this on my USP. Not my real steel, but my airsoft one. I did the mag cuts, re-contoured the grip (shouldn't have done it as there is barely any material there), and stippled the grip and the trigger guard. Holy ginormous pain in the ***.

It feels like it is going to skin my hand even after I hit it with some sandpaper to take the edge off.

Needless to say, I would not try any of this on my real USP. I'll leave that to the professionals.

USP's already come with scalloped cutouts in sides of the grip to pull out the mag.

They are scalloped / recessed areas near the magazine base plates, not full cut-outs.

So would you say the recessed areas are sufficient for all intents and purposes? Or would full cutouts be necessary for "tactical" use?

I wonder why the Mk.23 doesn't even come with the recesses in the grip...

Yeah, the scallops gave me a great template for the full cutouts.

The recessed areas are better than nothing, but when your mag is really stuck in the mag well, then the full cut outs gives you a better purchase on the stuck magazine.

Same thing on the Mk 23. I bought a Mk23 when they first came out and had an issue during a week long training course. I ended up making the receses into full cut outs. Also, even though the Mk23s are available for use by our SOCOM guys, they choose to use other sidearms.

My modifications that I offer on guns that I do for customers came about from all my training from the military and L.E.. They have a purpose. I don't make target guns or game guns. I only make up guns that will be used for actual duty / personal defense use. PERIOD. That's why most of the guns that I work on are for Military and L.E..

NEGATIVE.

that is illegal.

any PPT transactions where one party isnt in kalif, and FFL is still needed. and therefore, must belong in the "safe guns list" as authorized by CA DOJ.

if a kalif prisoner... er, citizen wants a firearm that is not on the safe guns list, there are 2 ways to do it.

1. a person not currently a citizen of kalif and will be MOVING to kalif as a permanent resident, can bring in as much firearms when they move. once they establish a permanent status as a kalif resident, then and oNLY then can this person sell a firearm to another kalif citizen via a PPT transaction.

also, this new resident must also declare each and every firearm they bring into the state by filling out a form and paying like $20 per firearm, IIRC.

also, there is a limit of number of firearms, a private person can sell to another private party. something like 5 per year. otherwise, this person will need to get a license to sell firearms.

2. a law enforcement officer, whom the state deemed as super humans and doesnt need to follow the safe firearm list law, can buy any firearm. once they take possesion, they can then PPT the firearm to another private party. but again, the limit of 5 firearms of so is in effect so a LEO cant just start buying guns and selling them as a side business, without an FFL...

Thanks for clearing up that misinformation, Leo.

Hate to say it, but I have to disagree. From California Depart of Justice:

Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.

Now, conducting a PPT in California does require transfer through someone holding an FFL (by California law), but that fact does not make the PPT a dealer sale. In fact, just because a party holds an FFL does not make them a dealer.

if its coming from out of state... its a dealer sale. (with some exemptions on the intrafamilial)

a PPT is a face to face. there is some speculation as to weather or not your can conduct a PPT from instate with a DROS worksheet from another party... (ie you get a signature and info from the seller on the worksheet, and run it without the seller being present) that said i wont do it.

as for conducting a PPT through a dealer... it has to be done by a CFD holder(california firearm dealer). plain and simple.

if its a C&R long gun over 50 years old one can conduct a face to face outside of a dealer. there is also some other exemptions regarding intrafamilial transfers.
