Bringing a car to Canada?
Bringing a car to Canada?
Most probably I will transfer to UBC next year, and I am planning to bring along my car. Is it possible to register a US car in Canada? I have been searching the dmv websites but could not find any information about this. Any experience or thoughts? Thanks.

Just don't register it it, u can drive into Canada for vacation. Tell them tour going to school or u are just in Canada for work for 6 months. U can can still insure a us title car in a different country for insurance reasons. That's way your insurance is legit!

I know it's no problem registering an American car in Canada (Canadians used to do that with Mitsubishi's in the '90s/early '00s before they were available up there), and I know that Canadian cars can be registered in the States (I've seen Acura EL's down here before), but I don't know about American cars being registered in Canada and then being reregistered in America. I also have no idea how any of the aforementioned processes work exactly. Have you tried Googling it?

When talking to border agents, I would not suggest telling them anything that isn't the truth- if you are going as a student, tell them that but I wouldn't say I'm working in Canada unless I had the proper visas and stuff, they tend to be kind of picky about that sort of thing.
sorry didn't keep this thread updated
but after googling I found many information which are totally different from each other.... some say it is easy and fast but some say it costs at least a grand? sigh
Actually I am holding a F1 student visa and a Canadian passport. And I don't think I will want to re-register the car again in the US.
Thanks guys.

Screw bringing your car, we have RHD JDM goodness. lol but if you really want to bring it. There are tons of sights to Google. Immigration Canada has some info. from what i got out of it. send a copy of your title to the customs port of entry you plan on taking 3-4 days before you get there. other wise you may be held there till it processes though. But yeah as chicken said, i didn't bring mine so I didn't research it too much.

Also, as a student I think your car's tags can still be valid from the states as being a student you qualify as "visiting".

Here's the official government link you need. there is quite a bit of JDM support here. Part of the reason the prices are higher is the auto industry still sees Canadian $$ at the old .60$ of US value vs todays .98 exchange rates.
