Ok it sounds like the PS3 is the best solution overall.
Thanks for the info guys. I have an xbox too, I just wish Microsoft would release an external bluray drive like how they had the HDDVD
that was like 2 years ago...

sony wont let them since still own most of the rights to blueray something about trying to drive sales of the ps3 being only blueray gaming system on the market and the fact sony and microsoft dont see eye to eye
But don't listen to me, I just work there... or something.

We are making a cheaper player, should be out in about 1-2 months. Can't talk about complete features or pricing yet, but it will be definitely cheaper than the BDP-83.
Ps3 as a bluray player. I mean thats the only thing mine is good for with it's lack of games and not as good online gaming experience compared to my 360.
Ps3 was the bluray player to get when prices were still high.
Now seeing that we've had some $77 bluray players during BF, no need to get a PS3.
Unfortunately none support MKV at the moment.
Best bet is to build an HTPC, or the WD media player and just hook up your hdd to it via usb.
And I know someone will say to use PMS playstation media server. yea its great, but it still transcodes on the fly. I too prefer to just have a device tha will play the MKV straight up.

oppodigital.com
*cough*
But then again, our player is not really a consumer level player. It's not for someone who's not considering a reference quality player. It competes more against players in the $1000+ category, and even then, it's more like a $2000+ player like the Denon's, Marantz, NAD or Pioneer Elites.
Our player had gotten us a lot of recognition in the Home Theatre world, more so than our DVD players. It's been rated best by CNET, and Consumer Reports. Beyond that it's been picked in nearly every Home Theatre/Audio Video magazines as best pick for performance.
But in terms of overall features vs price, when analog audio quality or image perfection/reproduction may not be top on your list, there are definitely other players. I own a PS3 as well, but I don't use it much anymore. I don't use the BDP-83 because I work there, and I was a fan before I worked there, I use it cause it's just plain better than my PS3.
But we don't offer streaming like Netflix or Pandora. We are working on DLNA (PS3 uses this for over LAN playback), and that looks promising in a future firmware update.
So, not sure how hardcore you guys in your HT gear, but, yeah... Our players play mkv and they aren't bad to boot.
We have a few refurbs, we haven't been selling them, just been cannibalizing them for parts when we need them. They be as good as new, cheaper than retail, and the warranty is the same, 1 yr. Definitely worth buying.
What I can do in a week or so and let you know.
