if not a dvd-r or +r drive, pick up a second drive and do software raid 5 in windows2k / xp.. might seem like a waste of a drive but it's saved me once already from losing files...

Pioneer dual layer DVD burners are right around $100 now, Ben q's are even lower. Only thing that sucks is that verbatim is the only company that makes the DL disks right now, $10 a pop. Hopefully by summer there will be some DVD-R DL drives out along with cheaper media!

That is the exact reason why I used my Christmas money last week and bought myself and 160gb external harddrive so I could back up all of my MP3 and video collection. I have mirrored my drives just in case on takes a dump. I have also been collecting music, vids and pictures for the last 5 years.

downsides with RAIDS is that the drive is with the primary one...

so if the machine dies with something electrical or a virus, both drives go...

friggin external drives can be had for under $150 for like 200 gb... firewire or usb 2...

or make your own removable firewire/usb2 chassis and have cheap ide drives go into a small tray that then goes into an external chassis:

$100 or under: removable chassis with 1 tray
$20: extra trays
$60+: ide drives.

you can then RAID these drives and when done, just unplug and put away in another location.

so if location of machine goes up in fire; or is stolen; or the machine crashes, you have a RAID image.

or, buy GHOST program or something and ghost to external drives. again, off location storage is key!

How do you "mirror" your drives? Curious!

Its not actually a true mirror. Just made an exact copy of everything and put it onto my external harddrive. That way, if the harddive on either my PC or laptop takes a crap, I will have an exact copy of everything on my external harddrive.

As explained by my dad since he works for and maintains a good majority of EMC's servers, a mirror is an exact copy of all information from one server placed on another server which I think is networked. So just in case one servers set crashes, there will always be another back up ready to go on the mirror server.

Cool. Yeah, that's what I do.

I wish I could find a program that would automatically "synchronize", or mirror, one directory (or several) to an external hard drive; say, once an hour/day/week, etc. I've yet to find one.

There's got to be some cheap, GPL'd or Open Source software that'll do that. It seems so easy.

There are tons out there, you must not be looking very hard, unless you are looking for something free.

You see, that's the catch. I want it to be free. It really isn't that complex of a function, so I don't want to pay for it. I don't need the functionality of something sophicsticated--otherwise I'd buy something like Symantec Ghost. I just want some free little utility that'll copy directories/data over to a spare drive, on a schedule (or live).

hmm

How does Knoppix work and how does it allow you to access a broken harddrive? That's pretty cool!!!
