if you got cash to burn, s03s hands down!
if you are on an ok budget, get the Azenis
if you are tight on budget, KUM-HOs
ha ha ha
there are lots of choices out there still.. shop wisely!
if you want tires that will last a long time? Bridgestone RE730s! I swear these never wears out! very good summer tire, but not so great in Rain.. don't even think about using RE730s in snow! They freeze up like a rock!

...yeah you're def. right, ES100s suck in stock replacement size, are prolly a LOT better in lower profile, wider sizes.

I was just kidding around with you. Weird that you say they have soft sidewalls... they are stiffer than SO3 sidewalls... Yoko is actually known for having stiff sidewalls. Must be your side dude. I have 215/45/17 and they are great. Same level of grip as the AVS Intermediates if not more.

Car Info: Not a WRX any more . . .
A slightly more tame choice: I've got Potenza RE950s on both my cars, and I've been pretty happy with them. Not the best summer tire but a pretty good year round tire that should last a while, and nice in the rain. And way nicer than the stock tires on either the Jetta or the WRX. I wouldn't trust them on snow though.
I never heard them squeal in a corner until I got the WRX and went into a few corners a little too fast.
But they didn't let go.
