Bay Bridge Shut Down by Standoff with Gunman
(CBS/AP) A driver who claimed to be armed with a gun and explosives stopped his vehicle on the upper deck on the Bay Bridge Thursday morning and created a standoff with police that halted all westbound traffic, CBS San Francisco reports.
Westbound traffic was being stopped at the toll plaza, California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Carman said.
The man called KCBS 740 Radio to say he had a gun and explosives and was distraught over his marital situation.
The driver had his daughter in his SUV, according to authorities. The SUV stopped near the center anchorage and the daughter ran toward police, who told officers her father was indeed armed. The age of the daughter and the alleged gunman was not known.
The driver has stepped out of his SUV and was seen sitting on the bridge railing and talking on a cell phone.
He has climbed over a side barrier and threatened to jump off the bridge as police try to talk the man into surrendering, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Traffic on the lower deck was moving freely.

back open. My bugeye and an STi were the first cars across the bridge. We were the only cars in the toll plaza and passed the caltrans trucks on the way down the other side. We were cruising at around 80. Never been able to do that during rush hour traffic before.. so nice.
