Old Town cafe used to be good. I kinda think their quality has gone down some. But Koi Palace is pretty good too (in regards to that area)

My favorite restaurants would have to be

Aqua, San Francisco
Boulevard, also San Francisco

The Counter (BETTER than Taylor's!)

I can't list just one. I just enjoy a lot of different places.

Gypsy's, Berkeley (cheap Italian food)
Top Dog, Berkeley (okay, this isn't really a restaurant, but I love Top Dog)
Val's, Hayward (just stick with the burgers...and use plenty of napkins, the buns are meh, but the meat is fantastic)
The Basin, Saratoga (good contemporary fare in a nice area)
Juunoon, Palo Alto (modern twist on Indian food)
Paxtis, Palo Alto (mhhh..deep dish pizza)
Lil' Biscuit House, San Mateo (for stick to my ribs southern food)
Santa Ramen, San Mateo
Tai Wu, Daly City (dim sum)
Burgermeister, Daly City (mhh..burger)
Bix's, San Francisco (great jazz playing and awesome chicken hash)
R&G Lounge, San Francisco (Chinese food so good, Bill Gates eats here)
Cleo's Brazilian Steakhouse (only here because I haven't been to Espetus yet and I've already been here like..3-4 times)

As for cheap eats and late night eats in general. I can't go wrong with most the Ulferts center in Milpitas. I usually eat at China Palace or Top Cafe. I avoid the place next door to China Palace like the plague though. LOL. Venus Cafe in Newark is also a great late night spot (well, till 1AM) and it's less of a drive than Milpitas. Also, I don't know why i'm always going out to the peninsula and SF to eat something other than chain restaurants.
