edgar,
Yeah get the Ruger. It was my first gun and I picked up a lot with. Still shoots like the day I bought it. Establish a relationship with your dealer though. It should be like your doctor.

Getting good with a Ruger Mk II 22 ( a great pistol BTW) is not the same as getting good with a 9mm or larger hand gun. 45's are one of the time tested all around best "man stoppers" Front Sight offers great training if you can afford it. see them at http://www.frontsight.com/
California is one of the worst places to own firearms and it is going to get even more onerous. Buy now or kick yourself later. That means buy ammo now too. Next time you vote think about this issue as most of these lost and stupid politicians will legislate your rights away because they think it makes them safer.
I agree, people shoot the way they train. Once you move up to something bigger than a .22 you will have to relearn how to shoot the new pistol. The transition from .22lr to a 9mm or .40 is alot more than moving onto a .40 or .45 from a 9mm. I suggest you start off on a 9mm. It's very mild to shoot. If you want a solid 9mm that's super accurate and cheap, look into getting a CZ75. If you got more money to spend, get an HK or SIG.

Looks like I'm more likely going to go with a 9mm

I've seen some good deals on cz 75's but reeds and target masters don't have them to rent...

Gunna rent out a glock 17, XD - 9 as soon as I can collar my buddy and take him to the range. Or if anyone has any of these guns and wants to hit the range drop me a PM, I'll pick up the "rental-fee" in ammo for ya
