I've actually done the 914 swap, but used a V8 instead of the flat 4. There is a host of problems going each route but none are impossible to fix. For cost, I would budget around $12,000-$15,000 including the cost of the car. That cost will be to "do it right" and detail work like the larger Porsche S calipers and ventilated front brake disks.
www.914world.com and www.914club.com have quite a bit of information on them. www.renegadehybrids.com is where we got the base kit from, I highly recommend them, however after you get everything you need to check for every nut and bolt. lso getting info out of them isn't the easiest thing in the world.
Do to us being too cheap we blew up our first V8. We are picking up a new built motor today and will be sticking it in within the next week or so. The stock transmission can only take around 300tq so you have to be extremely careful with it. You can swap out to a Porsche Transmission model number 915 but that is a hugely expensive project, think $10,000.
Eventually we are thinking of swapping in a flat 6 from a new Tribeca but those are all things left to be decided.
