Anyone know how to fix a PS3?
Well after 7 years my PS3 finally **** the bed. It got the blinking red light of death, similar to the red ring of death for XBOX's.
It's never overheated, but earlier tonight it randomly shut off. Now it won't turn on at all. Has anyone here experienced this and got their PS3 working again?

What ever you do, do NOT try video game 911!! Huge scam to keep your ps3 and sell you a "refurbished" ps3 (one they actually fixed) at a discount.
I've had that RLOD as well bro... I was told it was a motherboard issue (but I don't know a thing about the internals of consoles so it could have been anything). Had my 60GB for about 5 years and it just quit on me. I took it to a shop in SD (yeah that doesn't help...) and it cost me about 100$ish and they threw in a new cooling fan that sounded like an aircraft engine when the PS was running.
Doesn't help much but I feel your pain. Hope you get your PS3 back up and running.

You can call Sony and send it in to get repaired. If you have an original model then it is $129 to get the same model or $99 to get a Slim instead - they send you a prepaid box to ship it to them in. When it happened to me, I paid the extra to get a 60GB model back. You can try your luck with CL ads, but my friend did that and the fix lasted like a month. I've had mine back from Sony for 2 years with no further issues. Just be aware, it takes about a month. I ended up buying a slim in the meantime.

No it isn't. I have another 60gb with a dead laser and the unit works fine, it just doesn't read discs. The blinking lights and various colors of the lights will tell you what is wrong - the sequences can be found on Sony's site.

This may help you......
Checked your cables yet?
Ok here we go:
- PLENTY OF REST. Muster some patience and don’t touch your PS3 for the next few hours (or overnight, preferably). Let it cool and try again and see if the red light comes back on again.
- NEW FAN. Either you replace the old one with a stronger, better fan if it’s faulty or get an additional pad/fan on the outside.
-FIND A BETTER SPOT. Meaning, if you know you’re a heavy user, make sure your PS3 gets plenty of airflow and breathing space. Make sure you don’t feel an oven forming around your PS3… which will definitely lead to another series of blinking red lights that you need to repair again! And No Carpets!
-OPEN IT UP! DUST your PS3 with a mini vacuum… too much dust ruins the ventilation on the insides and traps the heat.
- Play around with the HARD DRIVE.
· Take your hard disk out and boot the PS3,
· Then turn it off and put the hard disk back,
· Re-boot again.
If it doesn’t fix the red light try an extra step:
· Take your hard disk out,
· Turn it on to get the game out,
· Put the hard disk back into PS3,
· Turn on. DO IT A FEW TIMES.
· If the blinking red light is still not fixed, it’s possibly a general hardware problem.
BEFORE YOU TAKE IT IN OR CALL SONY - HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
1 - If you send it to sony, they will send you a new (refurbished) replacement for $150 (min) BUT all your game saves and anything on the hard-drive is GONZO
2 - Expect to be charged anywhere from $30 - $149 at a repair shop (make sure they have a history of fixing this problem)
3 - If you want to save yourself money, and feel confident enough to repair the PS3 yourself (you can do it!!!) then check out this guys you tube video - USER NAME: "scoeas1982" - (that is NOT my account, and it is NOT me in the video) The videos are incredibly detailed, and it WILL help you to fix the problem yourself.
I hope this was of help you

So I did some research on fixes and I'm going to attempt to repair it myself later. Supposedly the cheap solder Sony uses on the CPU cracks over time from heat and causes this. You can use a heat gun to re-melt the solder and fix the connection.
If that doesn't work, I found a place locally that will repair a PS3 for around $40.
