Anyone here (who will admit to being ) a Geocacher?

In my never ending quest to provide new opportunities for Rallying, I am working on a GPS rally which I think should appeal to geocachers or anyone who knows how to work their GPS unit.

Essentially you will be trying to locate and either stop at or drive by a series of waypoints on a certain schedule, there will probably be questions for you to answer as well as timing targets at some waypoints in order to determine a winner

So if you are into geocaching -or if you are into rally- I'd be interested to touch base and invite you to try this out...

The only Geocaching I've ever done was at the Jaos Adventure Rally back in the day. I might be down for something like this, however.

I've been doing it sporadically over the past 5 or 6 years. Still one in Healdsburg I haven't been able to find.

I think it sounds cool, but we all need to have a minimum level of GPS, ie. Lat/Lon entries as well as street names - the newer ones do it...the older ones usually don't and don't make the error and use metric when you want to use DMS - I did that in error in NYK a year ago, funny outcome, i was about 15 miles off, haha.

Lots of the cheap ones don't do the above...maybe if I could see an example?

A little local knowledge or a few minutes on a map program should allow you to run with a very basic handheld like an e-trex, that's all I have.

The route is a series of 12 waypoints, each waypoint is one of three types of control;

1)GTC General time control- you show up and check in a specified minute with the checkpoint worker

2)Q&AC Question and Answer control, you show up and look for the answer to three questions, then move on to the next one.

3)STC Specific time control- you don't stop, you just drive by at a specified time.

It isn't a race, you should have sufficient time to get to each control, but it will test your navigation skills a bit.

We're doing a pre-check this afternoon, and should have a date picked in the next week or so so I'll let you guys know when we plan to put it on.

It would be great to get more than 4-5 people if we can...
