yeah me too, Im on a 3 week break between 2 credit school quarters, and they made it sound like thats the only time theyd pay me for because 3 hours of class a week makes me not appealing to places to hire me!? i dont know whats up with that.
there are jobs up here in truckee. they just dont pay much. but we are VERY seasonal up here. squaw is hiring people for the summer, as well as many locations on the lake. a customer of mine just hooked up a cheap room. rent is negotiable fur shure right now. everyone is affected, even landlords.
i wish the best of luck to all of you. you never know whan any one of us employed folk might be joining you....

If things keep going south it's possible I'll see if her and the baby can move in with my folks and I'll go try and get some seasonal work somewhere. Go up to Bear Valley and cut trees or try to find something anywhere else. Southern CA has TONS of design jobs right now.
I am ramping up BIG time right now with a friend of mine last night. We spent 6 hours last night going over my resumé and looking at places to put a portfolio up until we can build my website. Doing linkedIn and all that kind of stuff.
If anyone has any leads on design work, I'm all over it. I'll take bottom of the totem pole right now but I'm qualified for everything short of art director.

+1 - And this is why selfish people like you really have no place in the world. If you have nothing good to say, don't say it at all. All this guy does is come on the forums & make negative comments. I don't get why people have to act so immature.
Now anywho, I really do wish you the best of luck. Times are hard right now and I know many are struggling. You will find a job, just never give up. If you believe in yourself enough and you believe in your family, then nothing will stop you. Anything you can do will help them, whether you're making $8/hr or $30/hr. I know it's hard to go from making a lot of money to pretty much nothing, but do whatever you can. I have a lot of respect for people who are working at fast food places and making minimum wage. Money is money in the end but please don't let money define you. I come from a family who had nothing and it took a lot of hard work to survive so I can tell you that it is possible if you never ever give up.
Just my .02
Good luck.

oh believe me dude, my pride isn't keeping me from working at starbucks. I'd do it in a heart beat. The problem is I have to make a certain amount of money to make it worth having a job. I have a brand new baby so why should I go work 40 hours a week somewhere for $9.00 an hour when I'm gonna be paying way more than that for daycare. Just be working so someone else can raise my baby.
So I'm in a ****ty situation. I'm looking in to doing an EMT course somewhere and trying to get in to a paramedic program at westmed or something like that. Then I can work as a paramedic for a while and then bridge over to nursing. But I'm not giving up on designing either. I love doing it and I've spent 14 years of my life investing in it. I'm going to give it an honest go.
If I can get a portfolio up (working on it this very second actually) get my new resume out and make some new connections... basically push it as hard as I can then I'll feel good about it.
I honestly could get by doing freelance if I could just land a couple jobs a month. I don't need to make a fortune right now.

If by "these are the people my tax dollars are paying for" you mean people that have put in many years of hard work, paid their taxes, bought their cars and built them up with their money, and have since fallen on hard times due to the economy yet are still trying to find gainful employment, then you sir are correct.
If you are implying that they are free loaders then you definitely should consider keeping your mouth shut

I have been paying taxes probably damn near as long as that dude has been alive and I haven't asked for ****. I moved out of the house when I was 17. No car. No help. Worked my way through school working at a book store and gas station 60 hours a week and doing school about 25 hours a week. No car ment I was riding my bike over 200 miles a week. And I pulled a 4.0.
So **** that dude. Stupid little ****. If I didn't have to worry about paying for day care I'd be digging ditches right now. Hell I will if people want to pay me to do it part time.
I've thought about it but my wife has a great gig out here and I don't want to screw her up.

I can knock out pretty sick cards pretty quick so it's kind of a sliding scale. Depends on the company/person and budget... if I'm handling printing... etc.
I usually like to make $100-1000 out of a business card depending on if I handle the printers or they do.... more time... you know. But usually $250 or so is a solid average if I just send the file to the client or to their printer of choice. A business card can be as simple as just slapping a logo and type on to a double sided multiple varnish round cut, die cut, folded.... etc. So it varies.
Websites. I can design them but it is NOT my specialty and I don't build them. So it's a partnership situation. So I don't market myself for web work.
I did a HUGE amount of the design work on www.annieglass.com and www.beachstreet.com among others.
I am a print specialist. If you want a business card or a billboard, I'm your guy.
As a general rule I shoot for about $50 an hour for freelance... which usually ends up being $35 because I'm a perfectionist. Don't like to make less than $25.

My baby is 4 months old... 9 plus for is 13... 13 months. I've been unemployed since March of last year... that's 16 months. My wife got pregnant 3 month in to my unemployment and we had been trying for over 2 years... while we were both employed making combined about 100k a year. So you sir can **** off... not that I need to explain myself to you. Man... wtf is wrong with you people.
I made this post to give a heads up to the unemployed folks on the site as I knew there were a few... not get any kind of sympathy what so ever. Or comments like this.
Man... you act like I have 14 kids and I'm on welfare driving a $60k SUV and living in government regulated housing... not even looking for work.
I've sent out over 200 resumés. I've dug a few ditches to make money when I can and even detailed a few cars to make some money to buy groceries.
and for any of you other douches... I bought my car when I was working in SF making nearly $80k a year. I paid it off. The first year I had it I put a good chunk of money in to it. Then I took a $30k pay cut to move back to Santa Cruz and make my relationship work... my car has had very little money put in to it since I got married and ZERO since I had a baby and have been unemployed. SO **** off.

you should not have to explain yourself at all. everyone goes through tough times and sounds like you are doing everything you can for yourself and your family.
best of luck and wishes on the job hunt man. with your background and experience i am sure something will come about.
