People usually dont react like that.

Then again, there are TONS of people that go APE over the smallest things.

Alot of times we like to clean out the street of prostitues, not by arresting them, but just telling them to leave or they go to jail. We had to arrest this one for loitering for purposes of prostitution because she refused to leave her street corner..... go figure.

When you hit the streets every day, you have NO CLUE what you are going to encounter. Nothing is controlled, There is NO ROUTINE STOPS.

Look at the martinez cop that just got murdered. It could have been any of us. He did nothing wrong. Purelly suspect Luck.

Dont be worried about guys like that in the car. Be prepared to handle much worse and you will be fine.

Also, i wouldnt work a town or city with little to no crime. You will be bored out of your mind and you WILL have to deal with a lot of *******s who dont want tickets and have nothing but time to take you to court.

^^you have it completely backwards .

Most CHP end up picking up garbage on the freeways and streets. They are in charge of all moving violations as well as incorporated property damage. CHP is hiring like crazy right now, but the thought of me sitting in a car for 10-12 hours a day pulling people over on dangerous highways just to write a ticket and cleaning up after accidents doesnt seem very appealing .

Sheriffs on the other hand run their own jails, in charge of warrant arrests and run all unincorporated areas. they do everything a cop does plus more, being a Sheriff is not easy, but its rewarding. The sheriffs hiring process takes a LONG time and their selection is nothing less of picky. If you wanted to become a Sheriff you'd be able to get have access in various fields such as : Search & Rescue Team, Underwater Demolitions, SWAT , Bailiff work , Corrections and more depending on the agency. on the CHP its very limited.

... and NO i'm not an officer . . . yet. BUT i've done my fair share of homework. if you're still young (around 18) and you're serious about joining the force, you can go to the Police Explorer program which will help you out LOADS. Goodluck to those who are applying, if you need any more info dont be afraid to ask!

I bet it's pretty nuts. I know I wouldn't be good at taking that every day, so I am not in law enforcement. Tons of respect to those officers that go out there every day and still stay good people. Must be tough for real.

Alameda County does recruiting process every 3 months The entire application process only takes a couple months, then if you are accepted, you start training at the Dublin Regional Training Facility. You need to be in very good physical shape before you join. Here is a link with episodes from the TV show "The Academy" which follows recruits at a Los Angeles Sheriff's Office http://www.hulu.com/the-academy

You don't have to become a Deputy Sheriff to work in Search and Rescue though since it's a non-badged job. Law enforcement and SAR are two completely seperate units. Any citizen came join SAR since it's a non-paid job, as long as you meet the requirements of having a First Responder certification, then after the SAR training you pass the NASAR testing to be certified as SARTECH II. It's very easy to get into SAR if you have a first responder cert. You basically just join, then go through several months of the SAR training, then you become a volunteer in the unit. Then you have to go through a background investigation check, which is basically the same one the Deputy Sheriff's go through. It's a large packet with tons of questions, and they contact all of your references as well.
ALCO SAR only goes training once a year. Starts in April and ends in July.

If anybody wants to know anything about ALCO Search and Rescue, let me know since I'm in the unit

I spent 9 months in the hiring process for CHP until i finally bailed on it....

the CHP hiring process is longer than any other agency in CA and the chances of you getting into the academy are about 1-2% out of the people that fill out applications. The academy is also longer than any other academy in CA and if you ask anyone it's way more savage than any PD or Sherriff's training. CHP FTW! How lame would it be to be a city cop and not really have the opportunity to move around?
