I commute from Lafayette to Vacaville daily.
The commute is great, there is never any traffic.
sorry to say it sucks going the other way though

Going home it takes me about 10-15 minutes longer, there's usually a slowdown between calaveras and washington/mission on 680 from 5-7pm.
It's actually not that bad - I used to do this during the silicon valley boom ('98) from pinole to san jose. That took at least 1 hour 45 min - 2 hours. And commuted from treat blvd in Walnut Creek to san jose in '99 - that was 1.5 hours.
good luck - have a good selection of CDs, coffee, and listen to KGO810 traffic reports on the 8s (5:08, 5:18, etc)

Ah awesome .... I'm trying to leave as late as possible to catch the tail end of traffic.
Music is my sanity-saver. Last summer my stereo got stolen and I was commuting from Berkeley to Cupertino for about a month until I got a new deck. That was puuuure pain.
Are there a lot of CHP around 680?

I'd watch out on the Sunol grade - they're watching for commuter lane violators and speeders. I've seen them waiting on both the north/south bound directions on different on-ramps.
I think I see more CHP on 880 though... but it only takes one

I've lived in Orinda for 17 years and have never seen 1 CHP on 680. maybe its different farther south near milpitas. but even when i go down there using 680 i never see any CHP.

My bad, I don't really know the area. Where is this Sunol grade that I hear so much about?

its the big hill between sunol blvd and washington in fremont. It's about a 2 mile stretch. It used to be a nightmare of a commute, but it's a LOT better since the carpool lane went in and layoffs in the silicon valley occured.
i've seen plenty of chp on 680 in that area. Since there are a lot of on and off ramps its tricky to spot them before they spot you. Once i saw a whole school of like 20 CHP motorcycle cops sitting at a truck weigh station. I'd refrain from speeding in that area, know lots of friends that have been caught.

YES! There are cops sitting around on 680. I'm guessing from Walnut Creek/Layfayette to San Ramon area? I go that way every morning. At least once a week they'd sit on blind spot in the carpool lane.
I don't need more cowbell dammit!

The only ticket I have ever gotten was on 680SB in Danville. But I do see cops cruising the carpool lane looking for violaters cuz I know that is a huige ticket, much more then speeding.
