it is possible, and it's a better optical illusion.

fastest way to spot this is over lap the small one on top of the big one. You'll see that the smaller triangle is slightly taller than the big one when you line up the two sharp edges. Which means the angles are different, which means it's not a straight line when two line up as shown in the picture. And there goes your missing area!

you don't even have to draw the triangles out yourself to compare. Just look at the red triangle and count 5 units to the right from the sharp edge (= to the base of the green triangle). trace up towards the line and you'll see that the line is slightly lower than the 3rd unit, where it suppose to be if they both have the same angle (which to make a straight line).

so if you think about it, there is a 'dip' at the first image, and there goes your missing area.

here is a little illustration of where that extra area of 1 comes from that i just drew up real fast



there is a gap in between them. the angles of the shapes don't match up so there is extra space between them
