The grids don't line up, there's enough slop to account for the discrepancy.

actually thats not the answer. You can use grid graph paper cut up to reproduce the effect.. with no gap

Shenanigans. I'm going to have to try it with graph paper, but I remember that being the issue when we discussed it in a geometry session (with math majors, mind you.)
If I'm wrong, so be it, but there's some sketchiness there.

I'll give him this, I thought he was trying to prove it mathematically, which is why I was giving him crap. The optical illusion is a good one, though.
