Oakland needed a clutch receiver, not another James Jett.

i don't think we should get all sprung over Crabtree yet. yes, i'm glad he fell into the 9ers' lap, but the pro game is a lot different from college. he won't be playing Cowpie U every week. the cover guys he'll be facing in the L are just as, if not more, strong & speedy. plus, as someone else mentioned, he's coming of a pretty significant foot injury. it's going to take him a while to get acclimated to the pro game and shake off his rust too. again, i think he has the tools to be a very good receiver, but i doubt he'll be a star. he def needs to hit Jerry and ask help w/his training.
9ers still have a long, long way to go, in order to get back to respectability. we still need a real QB, but barring a miracle, we're not gonna get one anytime soon. i don't think the 9ers will be very good this season, but they can't be much worse than last year. i'd say 6-8 wins would be a good year for them.

Can't be much worse then last year? 7-9 isn't exactly 0-16. I don't understand how the hell you can downgrade us from last year when Nolan was coaching,Barry Simms at right tackle and JTO's fumble fingers starting a few games. Considering we almost beat a lot of good teams last year. Singletary has got this squad fired up, if you aren't optimistic for this year you must not be a FortyNiner faithful.

that said, i'll admit that i haven't followed the 9ers or the NFL much after the Young+Rice era, but i'm just a realist. it's great that Singletary is trying to turn things around, but the organization still has a long way to go. i'm a firm believer in success being bred from the top down. i just don't have much confidence in the Yorks. 9ers & Warriors are suffering similar woes because they've had the wrong people running things........on and off the field.

You are right, we haven't had a real QB since Young and we would be a lot better off if we kept Garcia way back when. But Shaun Hill played some damn good ball last season. No doubt there is room for improvements, but that goes for any team. Our defense since Singletary took over meshed a lot better then earlier in the season. I don't like the Yorks either but thats who owns our team. My point here is the niners only winning 6 games in '09 does not seem very likely to me.

oh well, i'm not gonna do it over, but dude that just replied said basically what i've been. 6-8 wins would be a decent season for the 9ers cuz they still have way too much instability at QB and in their line-up, which simply does not have enough talent to win much more than that. the only thing that we have going is that we're in the NFC West, which is one of the weakest, if not THE least competitive divisions in the league. i refrained from slating them for 10 wins because besides being a bit unrealistic given their personnel & inexperienced head coach (Singletary basically is still a rookie), 10 wins might actually win our division.
i hope i'm wrong, but i don't think so. it's good that the 9ers are showing a pulse again, but it's going to take some time for Singletary to get the squad to consistently produce. he still learning the ropes too. and we still need to acquire some more on field talent. coaches can only do so much. players are the ones out there.

I heard this on the radio yesterday and it's pretty true. Crabtree is the highest profile drafted player for the Niners.
I thought about this and it's pretty true. You can't say that about Joe, Jerry, TO etc. Alex Smith didn't have this kind of hype, sure he was the #1 overall but he wasn't the stud player that is expected to make an immediate impact.

Even though I said 8-8, I think we have a legit chance of winning the NFC west. The lambs and seahawks are in down transition years. Arizona is going to get a rude awakening without their O coordinator.
Until the 49ers have a consistent QB, and a pass rush (cuz for the living god they can't let receivers n' QBs run around all day and pick them apart), it will be a pretty tough season. i still think alex smith is the man. Sure he's been injured prone, but now he's been in the season around 5 years, used to the mental part of it. I think he'll plain outplay Hill and be the QB he was supposed to be a few years ago now. =P.
I would actually like to see the new TE Bear Pascoe start picking up the blocking TE duties and have Vernon Davis sprung to start making plays in space. Whether we use him for trick plays (like Reverses or Wildcat formations or something) we really need to get the ball in his hands so he can do something as he is quick. I am stoked we got Crabtree as we have desperately needed a legit #1 receiver as at Best our core receivers have been #2 receivers without a true #1 for years. Yes we do need to give our QB's more protection out of our front line. The defense still needs more upgrades as well. We are not Super Bowl bound yet, but we are definitely heading in the right direction. We all know though that we were more than just 1 draft away from being a contender again. It's gonna take time, good moves and luck, but I am liking what I am seeing so far.
Nate Davis pick could be interesting if he actually works out. If he doesn't, then so what as there are solid QB's coming out in the next draft class and I really do think we can pick up at least 1 of them next year. It looks like there are quite a few teams that already have established QB's or have the guy on their roster that they want as their franchise QB now including: Indy, NE, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, San Diego, Green Bay, Chicago, Oakland, KC, New York Jets, New York Giants, Miami, Buffalo, Houston, Cleveland, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Dallas, Philly, Arizona & Carolina.
That would mean that the only teams really probably still looking for a QB next year might be: Denver, St. Louis, Seattle, Washington, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Tennessee & SF.
Out of that group, Tennessee still has Vince Young so they might feel that they are okay. Seattle, St. Louis, Cincinnati have established starters, but they are getting old or banged up and might just want to look for potential replacement guys. So realistically that would leave: Denver, Washington, Minnesota, Jacksonville & SF all potentially not completely happy with their QB situations and looking for upgrades next year. I could see Minnesota & Jacksonville doing fairly well this year so that means, Denver, Washington & SF could fall enough to have a fairly good shot at getting Bradford, Tebow or McCoy in the draft next year.
Granted, this is football and anything could change. That is just what I am predicting as far as next year's draft class could go for QB's.
