Diesel is becoming increasinlgy popular with manufacturers, especially in this day and age of high fuel prices, mileage concerns and restrictions and high performance demands from consumers. Coupled with turbos, diesel is finally catching on in the states, even though it has been very popular the world across for decades. Mercedes has recently gotten into the act big time with their line of Blutec clean diesels, and with the switchover to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, engines are getting cleaner by the day practically. I am not at all suprised to see BMW planning such a motor. Here's top hoping there'll be a performance version putting out 3 or 400 horsepower and 7 or 800 lb. ft. of torque!!

is 23mpg all that great? I mean, the rating is always an overshoot of the actual, and most Subies putting out 300whp still get around 24+ mpg.

While it's comparing apples to oranges, the 2009 Turbo Diesel Jetta is projected to get 50mpg.

I have a friend who is getting one of these as a sedan early next year. going to be a sweet car

265hp and 425 lb/ft of torque would definitely be fun

My Subaru gets better mileage than on the dealer sticker....

show me a new car that gets 33mpg on the freeway with that much torque.

0-60 in 6 seconds and it's luxury.

Not to mention a diesel engine will last a long time.

BMW always under-rates their power levels as well.

That's a great motor, BMW motorsports transplanted two of them into the two cars they sent a friend of mine to run in the 25hrs the year before last I got to drive it before it got built into a race car on the street and dyno'd it. All I have to say is impressive the thing flat hauled ***!

Here is some info on the cars.

My understanding was that BMW Motorsports wanted more power so built a couple of full race motors and swapped them in a couple of weeks before the race (wish I got to drive those) and the diesel available over here wasn't good enough to they overnighted the shell race diesel that the Audi R10's use. That's some serious manufacturer sponsorship!

My 09 jetta has been avg'ing 40mpg with mixed freeway/city for about 1800 miles so far.

And today, I finally saw stations with Diesel gas being cheaper than premium gas(91).

I can't wait til audi releases their diesel models soon as well.
