20 year old firefighter from Hayward lost his life today..
HAYWARD (BCN) -- A 20-year-old U.S. Forest Service firefighter from Hayward died during a training exercise in Modoc National Forest Tuesday morning, a forest service spokesman said Wednesday.
At about 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, Thomas Marovich fell more than 200 feet from a helicopter while performing a routine rappel proficiency skill training exercise at the Backbone Helibase, forest service spokesman Stephen Riley said.
Marovich was a second-year apprentice with the forest service and was working with the Chester Helitack Crew from the Lassen National Forest. The unit had been assigned to the Backbone Fire, which started July 7 in Trinity County.
The training exercise was part of a routine re-certification training exercise the firefighters are required to do every two weeks, Riley said.
"Maria and I join all Californians in expressing our deep sadness over the passing of U.S. Forest Service Firefighter Thomas Marovich," said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in a statement. “Thomas selflessly dedicated his life to protecting our communities and saving lives and we are forever indebted to his service. Our hearts go out to Thomas' family, friends and fellow firefighters as they mourn this terrible loss.”
Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff in honor of Marovich, according to the governor's office.

Late post, but I have been working the fire in Willow Creek where this occurred for the past 3 weeks. I know a LOT of people on the helicopters that were working there, and a lot of people are spooked.
I cannot and will not elaborate on what exactly happened, but I will mention that the funeral procession was very appropriate.
Thanks for posting this. It is very appreciated. If anyone has any questions shoot me a PM.
