2.5RS GC8 Swap/BAR Questions

This goes out to those in the know. Im looking at a 2.5RS with a 02 WRX swap with some mild upgrades (VF39, TMIC, CAI, up-pipe, down-pipe, and some 06 WRX parts), he said it'll pass smog but its not BAR'd so obviously its either a dumb smog tech or a 'hook-up'.

So what all do I need related to emissions to pass a BAR inspection? Do I need an 02 charcoal canister and fuel tank? Or just everything in the engine bay? Most the after-market parts on his car I have the stock version for it, except a TD-04. Which brings me to the other question, if its a stock Subaru turbo just from another car would it fail? Im sure it would but figured I'd ask.

Thanks, hopefully I could get this car legal and for a deal since its not "BAR'd"

I took mine in with a VF39 they didn't even notice, as for everything else. They didn't check my fuel tank, they basically check the cats and thats it really lol

I would recommend you having EVERYTHING that would come with a 02 EJ205 on there just to make it a one trip deal. So yeah TD04, but you should not need the fuel tank, although where is the charcoal canister located?

Baring a car is pretty easy as long as its all factory. Remember 207s pass as 205s with a USDM downpipe.

It will be all stock minus the turbo which looks pretty stock, the 2006 stuff is just like injectors which arent noticable.

The charcoal canister is mounted under the rear of the car.

Should be able to get away with having everything stock minus the 39. Don't have anything in there that looks aftermarket.

When I got BAR'd they did look over the engine bay for a while and checked the exhaust. Make sure no CEL's and all sensors need to be hooked up right. They will smog it for you right then and there so be prepared for that too. Overall it was a pretty easy process when I went in a few years ago.

I have actually be wondering the same thing about bar legal swaps since I've been thinking about doing the same thing on my 1998 rs if I am unable to sell it.

This is all good to know, it has a tune for all the aftermarket stuff but if I put the cat's on it and a stock TMIC for a day it wouldnt do any harm. I will make the engine bay look as stock/clean as possible.

FWIW, an aftermarket TMIC is "Legal", if you dont have a stock TMIC handy to swap in. Also could they easily tell if you have a VF and not a TD turbo if you had a heat shield over it? I know my SPT heat shield makes it hard to see the turbo.

Have any pics of the car?

I legally passed my 02 wrx with STI pinks, VF-39, STI TMIC and a borla hush. I only needed a stock downpipe.

I pretty much have all the stock parts on my wifes 04 WRX, if I need to swap anything over. Im going to do the TMIC and intake box just to make it look as clean as possible.

This is the car, luckily its 20 minutes from my friends BMW/Mini shop down south and he can take a look at it.

when I got my last car BAR'd (98 RS w/ 06 WRX everything) I told the guy exactly what I did to the car and told him it was running off the 06 ECU etc they'll see that anyway but you know..

You will want to look as stock as possible. Stock cats a must. Stock catback highly suggested. They won't notice the vf39 so don't worry about that. TMIC is totally ok thats stock on suby's if he gives you **** explain that. I would try and ditch the CAI for a stock intake just to make things go by smoother.

What they'll look for when they plug in is to make sure your smog sensors are working. On my car there's something like 6 of them. FLI told me as long as 3 are working thats ok. That includes one for each o2 sensor etc. I had the charcoal canister hooked up, stock cats, both 02 sensors and a smog pump plugged in so my car flew with flying colors.

When I went (in like 08 lol) it cost 8.50 so worst comes to worse you find out whats wrong and do it again.
