"Too laggy" is a totally subjective term. How much lag are you willing to deal with on a daily basis? How soon do you need your turbo to spool?

Okay, since you apparently already bought one according to another thread you started, you can tell us.

internal and external

what does it mean when you can either get an internal or a external waste gate for a turbo what one is better or are they the same?

If you are wanting instant RPM with the 18g then you need the RPMs at about 2700 or higher when you stab the throttle. The further down from 3000RPM you are the more lag there is. It will start pulling hard at about 2500RPM if you are comming at it from idle but because of the vacumm drop and the time needed for the exhaust to actuall change the speed of the turbine when you stab the throttle while cruising you need to have her at about 3000 for "instant" response.

Not compared to a stock TD04.

not really, TD-04 is a great turbo. It pulls heavy on a 2liter wrx but the power is much smoother on the new 2.5liters. I wish subaru put a 20g on the new wrx's...it would be sick.

I have a Deadbolt td06 18g. It spools just a bit slower than my stock VF39 (on my 04 STi). I'd say within 100-200 rpm. The difference is really minimal, especially considering the fact that it will hold 20+ psi through redline. I don't consider it laggy at all on a 2.5l.
