Replacing a clutch on a 2000 Legacy GT

I've seen some videos on you tube of clutch replacement. The simplest way to replace the clutch is pulling out the engine or dropping down the transmission???????

Do you need 3 threads for this? If you are just doing the clutch I'd say just drop the trans but if you need to do any engine work pull the engine.
