measuring pad wear w/ wheels on car
i have a new set of OEM f/r brakes for the 02 wrx, and I have calculated that if you have ~ 10/16 from back of pad to rotor you're brakes are new, and if you are down to 4/16 you're getting low.
for rears, 1/2" full, 1/4" close to worn.
Of course the best way is to pull the wheels and measure accurately, and this assumes your pads are fully against the rotor. Any comments on this method?

exactly.
That is why I provided that data from new pads uninstalled. So that you can measure the back of the pads, to the rotor (with pedal pressed so no gap between pad and rotor).
And, therefore know how much pad is left, relative to a new brake pad.
