Ok well i went ahead and had my downpipe installed today. I was unaware of how technical it was to get to putting downpipe on (taking out intercooler and brackets). I love the sound of it and the turbo spooling up but just a bit paranoid of the white smoke i get rarely. the performance of the car is MUCH better now but i dont want to get pulled over by a cop. I am just curious if anyone knows penalty in southern california for having the downpipe on? Thanks for any help.

Im in northern cali (Bay Area) and in think the laws are the same up here as down there. It's illlegal to remove any of the cats on a car. If you get pulled over they will proabbly make you go to a smog referee to get it checked. if that happens your going to have to put your stock down pipe back on. just to play it safe, i would reinstall your heat sheild if its not on there. you might have to modify it by cutting to fit the DP, but its a good idea to have it on so the DP doesnt look as obious.

you're car can be impounded for not having a cat. but they rarely do. most likely you will be sent to the state ref the very next day. you would have to switch the dp back stock that day. i would do what dlux wrx said. weld the heatshields back on. i havent got pulled over for a loud exhaust yet hopefully you wont too
Next day? Never heard about that. You would have to switch back to the stock Dp because they will want you to get your car checked out by a smog ref. What you SHOULD do is pay some steel mender person to take off the heatshield on your stock DP and 3rd cat, and have them wrap it around your downpipe to make it seem like you have a stock downpipe when they look under the car. I think I'm going to have that done at the shop next to MPJ. WHenever I can scrum enough $$ for the Borla hush =P
i wouldn't be worried about getting pulled over unless you have some SUPER DUPER loud exhaust
i have 0 cats and a loud exhaust, and i live in a little town and i never get crap for it (knock on wood)
i used to be worried, but i've had cops behind me goin in the same direction/follow me and i've never been bothered for my exhaust

lol
heh, sniffing k9 cops, lol. I am not so worried about it because i dont see any smoke coming out of exhaust when car is in gear and also the smell is no worse than most of the older cadillac cars or POS cars. So my car just smells like one of them. Ill just say "It was like this when i bought it officer".

I plan on getting the turbo XS and rfl-ti axle back for my rex, not really worried on how loud it is... There are louder cars and especially the damn harleys...
Thanks,
