Not to get technical, but does anyone know what causes the problem? I had clutch shudder with the old clutch. I replaced it with an Exedy Sport clutch (including new disk), and a lightweight Exedy flywheel and my shudder has persisted. Anyone know why?

Don't take this the wrong way, please... these questions have been answered scores of time in the technical forums. Just search for "clutch shudder" and find a few hours to sit down with some coffee and read
For the record most people who have gotten the fix are happy with it and do not notice much of a performance decrease (heavier flywheel), so I have read. Not everyone, but overall , they seem to be happier after the fix.

The explanation I got was the clutch disc material being hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. Moisture permeates the disc, it changes shape on the surface, and it no longer mates well to the flywheel surface. That is why burning the clutch makes it go away- it evaporates all the moisture out of the disc. The purpose of the heavier flywheel is to make 1st gear launches easier.
Sorry to bring this topic up again. I have read much of the long long posts given in the past. I am just trying to find out if anybody has had the clutch changed out in the bay area. Mine had the problem when I initially got my WRX. This summer due the really weird warm weather in berkeley I haven't noticed it as much, but I am still thinking about taking it in and having a subaru dealer take a look at it. Hopefully to replace it.

There's an actual technical service bulletin for the clutch shudder. If you bring it to a dealer they'll replace it under warranty. Someone scanned a file that was the exact tsb, but I'm too lazy to find it. Search here or nabisco.

Yeah I just brought my 02 to Carlsen for clutch judder. Bad timing. It's been 80 in San Fran for the last couple of days so you can imagine Redwood city. They say it runs like a charm even at 6:45 am. I guess I just have to wait a few frickin months till it gets colder...darn. They're techs are cool though. Definetly gonna get it done before snow season. In tahoe the shudder is a biotch.
Thanks Subawho, yeah this weird weather in the berkeley/San Francisco area will probably lead the techs at Albany subaru to come the same conclusion (that it runs perfectly fine). I'll guess I wait for awhile and hope it gets chilly in the bay some time.

isn't it damn ironic that when we want the dealer to find something wrong w/our cars they can't?
This is the First time I loathed the phrase "Your car runs beautifully! Really smooth." damn

Brought mine in to Carlsen for the 30k service and casully mentioned it, (it was doing it off and on) and they kept it over night and replaced everything and a rental. Ask for ckevin to do the job if you decide to go with Carlsen.

Got mine replaced at Carlsen by ckevin two
months ago, no more shudder ever since.
I know another guy who had his replaced at
Marin.
Albany said it knew about the problem and
would replace the clutch if the technician
could demonstrate the shudder.
